It has been two years since Out Takes Dallas has held a multi-day festival — for the 10th season, the company went to a monthly format only — but that ends tonight.
Starting tonight at the Inwood Theater (not the Magnolia — take note!), three days of gay film begin. First at 6 p.m. is a reception, followed by the opening night short (local filmmaker Robert Camina’s Martini The Movie) and the feature The New Twenty (pictured). There are more films on Friday and Saturday, including the late-night closer Pornography.
Thought about going to Out Takes this weekend but after looking at their sparce movie offerings I think I wil pass. As a former volunteer from 1999 and 2005 (I think) it seems like it is a shell of its formner self. What happened? Very disappointing…
With the advent of YouTube, iTunes, DVRs, and high speed cable connections it would seem the movie industry has dwindled or settled for telling the same old story over and over with just different characters.
I used to go to AMC grand twice a month and now I go about twice a year. Be it str8 or gay the fluffy bunny stuff get’s pretty old after awhile. The special effects are more important than the plot and there hasn’t been much in the way of plot for the gay world since Queer as Folk.
Let’s not forget the latest Vampire Fever going around these days too..
I saw the movie pictured above, THE NEW TWENTY, at Outfest. It’s a really good film – very unusual in its casual depiction of gay/straight friendships between young men. Not at all like the usual “fluff bunny” pandering gay fest content. Well worth seeing! Reminded me of The Big Chill and St. Elmo’s Fire.
