Between 1,200 and 1,400 people participated in Sunday’s Million Gay March, according to Laura Martin, LGBT community liaison officer for the Dallas Police Department.
I finally caught up with Martin this morning to confirm the estimate. My independent estimate was a minimum of 1,000.
Martin said she was positioned in a patrol car with another officer near Oak Lawn Avenue and Cedar Springs Road during the march.
“She and I each counted as people passed, and we each came up with between 1,200 and 1,400,†Martin said. “That’s going to be a pretty accurate estimate, I believe. That’s the official police estimate.”
Asked about those who’ve suggested that only 300 people attended the March, Martin said, “Without a doubt, that’s not accurate.â€
Thanx John for clarifying. No one believed me when I said the same thing although I talked to Laura IMMEDIATELY after the rally. Hopefully, we can move pass this ridiculous discussion and talk about the future of this march. I would really appreciate the public’s input about likes and dislikes b/c we really want to improve the quality of the march and rally. Please only helpful criticism. I don’t want to see another 40 comments about the damn march count.
Thanks for posting that! I was a nice turnout for a 99 degree day too!
Thanx to Hardy for marching in 99 degree weather in full black and a leather vest! Muchos Cajones!
I’m actually suprised the number wasnt higher. I guess I was not in a position to count though being in it and all. It certainly was an overwhelming number of people and I was happy to be a part of it.
WASSUP WASSUP NUMBER ONE NEWSPAPER WASSUP WASSUP
Great! So that guy who called you a liar on the prior post should be apologizing right about…NOW!
yeah, that was a great turn out. so andrew, any plans to make a formal apology for attacking john wright’s estimates?
The Dallas Morning News had “about 300 people, too.”
I still believe what Andrew said and I have looked at all the pictures posted – I never see more than a few hundred people. I also think the “pro-march” people want the rest of us to believe that it was successful. 300 or 1200 people are both very insignificant.
The only way to resolve this is the pictures and the video.
Mark….seriously, the only way to resolve this is through pictures and videos?
OK Gay Dallas, let’s all gather this Sunday with our phones, digital cameras and camcorders so we can officially settle this once and for all.
Mark, Chance and Andrew…wanna be the VIP hosts for the event?
I was there, I turned to my BF and asked how many people do you think are here and we both look around and decided there were more than 1000. It was HOT, Crazy Texas HOT, just think if the weather had been nice how many people would have been there. I Loved It. Good job to all those who helped and covered the event.
Seriously…GET A LIFE AND MOVE ON!
Put your passion where it will count the most.
Did you read what Tisha said in the first post: “I don’t want to see another 40 comments about the damn march count.”
Don’t piss her off.
I know everyone is saying we need to get over the counting thing, but I was there, too. I’m certain there were less than 300 people. I am now getting a little offended that so many people in our community lie with such ease.
The Dallas Morning News said “a small crowd of about 300 people.” They got it right.
We should be talking about why the event didn’t work, not lying about its success. It is even clear from the photographs that it was a small group of people.
So, let’s stop lying and start discussing why so few people came. I’m ashamed of the fact that we can’t get a crowd together to March, but every Friday and Saturday night thousands of gays prance around Cedar Springs. Can’t we March a few times a year?
