The Norman, Okla. City Council unanimously passed an ordinance protecting LGBT residents from housing, accommodation and employment discrimination, according to the Daily Oklahoman. Norman becomes the first city in Oklahoma to pass a nondiscrimination ordinance.
In 2010, Zach Harrington, 19, committed suicide after he attended a Norman City Council meeting and heard residents using toxic language as the council debated an LGBT History Month resolution. His suicide inspired Fort Worth City Councilman Joel Burns to make his famous anti-bullying speech at a Fort Worth City Council meeting.
Harrington’s parents sat in the front row as the resolution was passed at the council meeting on Monday, Dec. 22. More than 100 supporters of the equality resolution attended the meeting. There was no report of protesters.
