It’s official: The Dallas Parks and Recreation Board has voted, unanimously, to rename Lee Park as Oak Lawn Park.
The vote actually reverts the park to its original name; it was changed to Robert E. Lee Park in 1936 when the monument to Confederate general and slave owner Robert E. Lee was unveiled there.
CBS Channel 11 reports that the granite pedestal — on which the Lee statute stood until it was removed on Sept. 14, after a week of trying, and which has the former name Robert E. Lee Park emblazoned on it — will be covered until the park’s new permanent name can be decided.
