New Hampshire Gov. John Lynch announced today that he will sign a bill making same-sex marriage legal, but only if lawmakers first amend it to include protections for religious institutions. Otherwise, Lynch said, he will veto it.
The executive director of New Hampshire Freedom to Marry told The Washington Blade she has no objections to the proposed amendments, which reportedly are similar to provisions in same-sex marriage laws in Vermont and Connecticut.
New Hampshire would become the sixth state where same-sex marriage has been legalized, not including California, where it was later banned.
If you’ll remember, the California Supreme Court is facing a June 3 deadline to issue its decision in the lawsuit challenging Proposition 8.
Also this week, the New York Assembly passed a bill to legalize same-sex marriage, but the measure reportedly is a few votes short of the number needed for approval in the Senate.
