Prevention program uses media capabilities to reach gay men at risk

The Medical and Health Research Association of New York City, working in collaboration with New York University’s Steinhardt School of Education, is touting the success of an HIV prevention intervention program that uses the digital media capabilities of the Internet to reach men who have sex with men and are at risk of contracting HIV.

“HIV is Still a Big Deal,” available online at www.hivbigdeal.org, includes an eight-minute video vignette several other videos are still in production called “The Morning After” that is available for viewing and downloading.

The video focuses on disclosure of one’s HIV status to sexual partners and the importance of being tested for HIV.

The study was co-authored by Dr. Mary Ann Chiasson, Dr. Sabina Hirshfield, Mike Humberstone and Dr. Francine Shuchat Shaw.

They presented their findings at the International AIDS Conference held last week in Toronto.
