Painting got Charles William off the street

Having developed a love of art at the age of three, gay painter Charles William let his interest lapse as he grew older. After becoming indigent five years ago, William found himself seeking assistance at The Stewpot Open Art Studio — a ministry of First Presbyterian Church that offers workspace for artists of all skill levels. Through a conversation with one of the shelter’s clients, William made his way to the art room and discovered a new hope. He’s now a national award-winning artist. And after several years of living on the street, William now lives in an apartment that he partially pays for by selling his art at the Stewpot.

Many who were on the streets when they joined Stewpot classes have improved their lives and are no longer homeless.

William along with gay artists Marty Ruiz and Bob Munro are participating in Saturday’s "Art with a Cause" the show, which will be held in the Bank of Texas lobby. The one-night silent-auction show featuring 15 artists, which will benefit Hope for Peace and Justice.

Based in Dallas, Hope for Peace & Justice equips progressive people of faith to be champions for peace and justice by creating progressive faith-based activists.

Begun in 1990 by two graduates of Rice University, the Daly + Genik firm are one of five U.S. firms featured in Phaidon Press’ 2005 volume of 100 best emerging architects. Daly Genik is currently designing a home for the Harvard Art Museums in the new Allston Campus.
