Apparently, enough people raised enough hell over revelations this week that Jonathan Crutchley, co-founder and board chairman of the gay sex Web site Manhunt, gave the maximum legal campaign contributions to Republican presidential candidate John McCain that Manhunt felt compelled to take action.
Towelroad.com — which first reported the news about Crutchley’s contributions on Wednesday — just posted a report saying that Crutchley has stepped down from the board. The post includes the text of a press statement released late Thursday by Larry Basile, the other Manunt co-founder, in which Basile details his liberal credentials, demands he not be called a Republican and, almost as an afterthought, ends with an “oh-by-the-way” notice that Crutchley had, earlier on Thursday, stepped down as board chairman at the request of the other board members.
As part of his background info, Basile notes that he marched with ACT UP (and was arrested during protests), that he wears an Obama T-shirt and cap and that he started donating to Obama’s campaign in March 2007. He also indicates that Crutchley’s Republican leanings were a surprise to the others at Manhunt:
“It should be known that Jonathan Crutchley’s donation to McCain left the entire Board in disbelief. I am disappointed that we have lost some customers, and I understand the anger. It is too bad for the web site if we lose customers, but PLEASE never refer to me as a Republican. I consider it an offense.”
