We all cheered in December when lawmakers in Mexico City passed a law legalizing same-sex marriage and adoption by same-sex couples. Now comes word that Mexico’s attorney general, Arturo Chavez, has lodged an appeal with the country’s highest court to overturn the marriage and adoption equality law.
Chavez claims the law is “anti-constitutional.”
But supporters of the law say Chavez is waaaaaaayyyyy overstepping his bounds. Mexico City Mayor Marcelo Ebrard says Chavez has made “a grave mistake” and that it isn’t the federal AG’s job to decide the capital’s laws. And leftist deputy David Razu, the legislator that initiated the law, says Chavez’s challenge has no basis in law and goes against rights and freedoms.
