Mark Reed of Dallas was among six people arrested today for chaining themselves to the White House fence during a “don’t ask, don’t tell” protest organized by GetEQUAL, Queer Rising and Talk About Equality. Reed is on the far right in the above photo, which was just posted on GetEQUAL’s Facebook page. Reed and the other five activists have been taken to the Anacosita Park police station, according to reports, and they likely will have to spend the night in jail. Whoever has Reed’s phone, presumably partner Dante Walkup, sent me a text message a few minutes ago saying, “He was proud when they took him away! Even happier when they let him keep his cigarettes.” Below is video of former DNC Chairman Howard Dean addressing the rally. For additional coverage, see The Advocate.
UPDATE: GetEQUAL confirms via Twitter that Reed and others will spend the night in jail. They’ll appear in municipal court Monday morning.
Okay, how many times must this group go back to this same wall for chainings, huh? I mean, REALLY now. It’s beginning to look like a fetish (although I will admit that Mark’s looking kinda fine on that wall, making the other folks look like sacks of potatoes….but I digress).
The media has ignored this publicity stunt. These misfits DO NOT represent the LGBT Community.
Many of us have been asking the media to ignore them. Thankfully, they have.
We don’t need LGBTeaBaggers. We need solutions.
I for one am very very proud of Mark, and think this type of activism is just what the doctor ordered.. Andrew W… when is your next uppity little Ilume meeting about how religion is making the LGBT Community wrong?
Yes, Daniel – “you, for ONE.”
The LGBT Community has rejected these publicity stunts and thankfully they have gone un-noticed by the media. Every tactic, strategy, method or plan NEEDS to provide evidence that it is effective.
I think the community has spoken: GetEqual, Please Get Lost, unless you can provide evidence that these “childish” stunts (Barney Frank) actually “change any minds.”
Those who complain about injustice and having our rights taken from us always complain about it online but you never seen them on the front lines of the movement. Daniel I have seen you on the front lines of the movement (THANK YOU!), AndrewW who are you? and what are you doing to gain fulll equality? What risk are you willing to take?
hummm,,,oh ok you will do it at your chair in front of your computer. that’s right, my bad I thought you were actually going to do something.
With Howard Dean willing to step up it is pathetic the average homosexual does not have the pride to take part.
The only reason LGBT folk do not have equality under the law is because many feel they do not deserve it.
Making a fool of yourself is not a “risk.” These stunts have NOT been helpful.
Figuring out how to actually win is helpful. Some people are doing that and i am glad to be financing it. Those that promote these stunts need to find a way to rationalize their value, because the media and the LGBT Community has either dismissed them OR ignored them. That should be telling.
Well done, I am among the 10,800 fans of GetEqual who applaud this effort.
Wow. 10,800 fans. There are more than 20 million members of the LGBT Community.
Even “Texas Hold-em” has more than 17 million “fans.”
