When a hypocrite like George Rekers gets caught with a prostitute, we delight in this homophobic crusaders’ downfall. But here’s how exposing bigots like this helps the side of equality.
First, Miami New Times, a sister publication of Dallas Observer, broke the story when a friend of the rentboy figured out who the john was and met them at the airport and took pictures.
Since then, Rekers’ hypocracy has been unraveling.
In an article in today’s Miami Herald entitled “Physician Heal Thyself,” Leonard Pitts used the case to prove that homosexuality cannot be “cured.” If it could, he would have “cured” himself.
To anger his mainstream audience, Pitts pointed out that Florida taxpayers paid for the rentboy. Rekers recently received $120,000 from the state for testifying as an “expert” witness in the on-going case defending Florida’s ban on adoptions by same-sex couples.
He called Rekers’ actions a “moral crime.”
Put yourself in the shoes of the teenager, bewildered and frightened by these feelings he or she is not “supposed” to have, feelings of sexual attraction to people of the same gender. You try to deny them, try to ignore them, try to suppress them, but they will not go away. You are all alone, isolated behind a secret that presses down on you like weights, a fear of rejection that haunts you like ghosts.
He called it hypocrisy preying on the most vulnerable. He called it sad and said, “ours is a culture that would encourage and reward such duplicity in the first place.”
Sad that he used his time, energy and money to encourage corruption with the lives of gays and lesbians.
Another one bites the dust. George Rekers is a victim too. It just goes to show you how our society has hurt the gay and lesbian population through hate and prejudice. That a gay man will go so far to deny that he is homosexual shows the fear and hate or our society towards homosexuals and lesbians. In the USA we have a long history of prejudice. And to think this country was supposedly founded on the principles of freedom and justice for all. The monster of hate and prejudice is a double edge sword. It damages the holder of the sword and those they attack.
Like the fictitious New Testament character “Peter,” invented sometime in the second century A.C.E., the present head of the so-called Family Research Council, heir hatemonger Tony Perkins, at first denied even knowing anyone by the name of “George Rekers,” when asked by media representatives. Subsequently reminded that Rekers co-founded the odious tax-free corporation Perkins runs with his twinned-hatemonger, James Dobson, he of the likely mail-order doctorate, Perkins in essence exclaimed, “Oh, yeah, that guy; but I’ve not seen him and he’s not been active here for some ten-years.” Right! I’m sure that questionable explanation and denial of sorts will cause the holy-bigot-spigot to reopen for hate-based donations to again flow into your coffers for the inspired purpose of further lining your pocket, Tony. And too, Rekers’ hapless adopted son was but 16-years old at time he was adopted. Wonder who lifted Rekers’ luggage, as it were, until he trolled Rentboy.com for a young replacement? Has a responsible anyone, say an official from the Florida Attorney General’s Office, interviewed that poor lad? Isn’t it likely that he’s been sexually molested or forced to perform acts on Rekers? Not yet interviewed, you say? Well, shouldn’t someone/anyone, preferably a Floridian, at least make an emergency request to state authorities? Also, perhaps some Florida citizens should join together and sue the McCollum and Rekers for the funds paid Rekers for his knowingly unscientific and baseless testimony, under any number of statutory authorities. Do we have a highly qualified and Florida-licensed attorney in this audience, I wonder?
