On a summer Sunday evening, dozens of Long Islanders shared food, drink and a great view of the Long Island Sound at the North Shore home of Suffolk County legislator Jon Cooper.

While laughter and camaraderie were bountiful, it was all serious as we discussed our common struggle to secure marriage equality in New York and the key role that Long Island state senators will play in this battle.

Long Island Senators Brian Foley and Craig Johnson thanked HRC for its strong support to get them elected and urged us to help elect more supportive senators from Nassau and Suffolk counties.

HRC endorsed-challenger Dave Mejias of Hempstead spoke of his unwavering support for marriage equality and expressed his eagerness to join Brian Foley and Craig Johnson as marriage equality supportive Long Island senators.

Having been born and raised on Long Island, it was a personal as well as political pleasure to see such broad support for equality in this part of New York.  Our volunteers left the evening energized to elect more friends.
