DGLA to host candidate forum
The Dallas Gay and Lesbian Alliance will host a Meet the Candidates forum at 4:30 p.m. Sunday, April 14, in the Vixin Lounge at Sue Ellen’s, 3014 Throckmorton St.
Candidates in Dallas City Council races will answer questions and address issues of importance to the LGBT community. DGLA’s PAC has been privately interviewing candidates but won’t make its endorsements until after the forum.
DGLA President Patti Fink said the endorsement committee will meet next week after the forum and vote on its endorsements for the May election. At press time, PAC chair Damien Duckett said candidates expected to attend include Scott Griggs and Delia Jasso from District 1; Vern Franko, Adam Medrano and Herschel Weisfeld from District 2; Leland Burk from District 13; and Bobby Abtahi, Kevin Curley, Philip Kingston and Jim Rogers from District 14.
Unlike Stonewall Democrats, which made endorsements in March, DGLA is nonpartisan and can endorse candidates with Republican Primary voting histories.
Rainbow LULAC sets meet and greet
Dallas’ LGBT chapter of the League of United Latin American Citizens will host a meet and greet for City Council and school board candidates at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 18, at Havana Lounge, 4006 Cedar Springs Road.
The evening will also include a new officer induction ceremony for LULAC #4871—The Dallas Rainbow Council.
Candidates Scott Griggs, Delia Jasso, Monica Alonzo, Herschel Weisfeld, Luis Hernandez, Rafael Narvaez III, Linda M. Wilkerson-Wynn, Eric Cowan and Lew Blackburn are among the candidates who have agreed to attend.
“The purpose of this Meet and Greet is to give candidates an opportunity to meet with their constituents in the LGBTQ Community,” said chapter President-elect Jesse Tafalla Jr. “As we all know, marriage equality and immigration reform are at the forefront in our country at this time, and it is important for candidates to meet with people who are affected by those issues as they run their campaign for May’s elections.”
The LULAC meeting is open to the public.
