Rainbow Garden Club’s May meeting focusing on ‘Ferns for Texas’
The Rainbow Garden Club will hold its May meeting Sunday, May 17 at 2 p.m. at a private home in Kessler Park. For information on the exact address, go online to the Rainbow Garden club Web site www.rainbowgardenclub.com.
This will be a joint meeting of the Rainbow Garden Club and the Dallas Fern Society, with the program being provided by Kent Kratz, a member of the Dallas Fern Society, who will be speaking on "Ferns for Texas." Kratz will discuss growing between 10 and 20 varieties of ferns in the harsh Texas climate with examples of various ferns to illustrate.
‘FRESH’ fundraiser for Legacy; DonorBridge can double contributions
FRESH!, a fundraiser for Legacy Counseling Center and Founders Cottage featuring food, fashion and fun, will be held at Luna de Noche in Victory Park, Sunday, May 17, beginning at 6:30 p.m.
David Call of David Call Interiors said he and other Fresh! Organizers have worked with James Martinez of Barron & J. and some of Dallas’ top models "to create a unique entertainment experience that includes live entertainment with Vince Martinez, Patty Breckenridge and Donald Fowler, a techno-fashion show and a contemporary art exhibit and sale."
Supporters of Legacy also have the opportunity to double their donations to the organization through the DonorBridge program debuting Friday, May 22. DonorBridge is an online database created by the Communities Foundation of Texas that makes mutual connections between not-for-profit organizations, donors, and supporters.
Through a series of grants, DonorBridge will match any donation from as little as $25 up to $2,500 per individual or $5,000 per married couple. Legacy’s maximum benefit is $25,000 in matched funds, all totaling $50,000.
Because matching funds are limited, Legacy is coordinating donations at the exact start of the event at 12:01 a.m. May 22 to ensure that all donations will be matched dollar for dollar before the available funds run out. Those who want to take advantage of the effort but don’t want to stay up until midnight can contact Legacy for a contribution fund through which the organization can enter information on the donor’s behalf at 12:01 a.m.

Marc Adams to speak at Community Unitarian Universalist Church
Community Unitarian Universalist Church’s Faith in Action is sponsoring writer and speaker Marc Adams for a presentation Friday, May 22 at 7 p.m. at the church, 2875 East Parker Road (just east of Jupiter Road in Plano)
Adams was reared in a fundamentalist Baptist home, but was aware that he was gay by age 7. He attended a number of religious schools, including Jerry Falwell’s Liberty University and even tried reparative therapy techniques to "cure" his homosexuality before beginning his journey to self-acceptance at age 23.

He is the author of eight books, including his award-winning autobiography, "The Preacher’s Son," five collections of poetry and "The Do’s and Don’ts of Dealing with the Religious Right." He is also the founder and executive director of HeartStrong Inc., an educational nonprofit agency providing outreach and support to LGBT students at religious educational institutions.
LOSF holds benefit for Hazel Hatcher Scholarship fund
Legacy of Success Foundation will hold its annual Hazel Hatcher Scholarship Benefit at 6 p.m. on Sunday, May 31, at the South Dallas Cultural Center, 3400 South Fitzhugh Ave. The event will include an evening of pledges, a silent auction, presentations by former scholarship recipients and musical entertainment by Linny Nance from his newest latest album, "On & Poppin."
LOSF is a business and cultural organizationformed to bring the LGBT and affirming community of color together. LOSF administers the Hazel Hatcher Scholarship Fund, established in 2005 and first awarded in 2006, which recognizes out LGBT students of color who are making significant contributions to their communities.
The Hazel Hatcher Scholarship Fund was designed to recognize "out" LGBT people of color who are making significant contributions to their communities. LOSF officials said the organization believes the scholarship is important because "much of the equality that we seek will be won by those who are able to effectively communicate with and influence our society and legislators. We also realize that there is not much assistance available for those who seek to elevate themselves through education, so we seek to support and encourage those LGBT people of color by providing this scholarship to those enrolled or seeking enrollment in accredited technical, undergraduate and graduate programs."
Currently, the Hazel Hatcher Scholarship is the only award given specifically to LGBT individuals of color by an LGBT organization in Dallas.

UCAGH hosting benefit at The Bronx for Million Gay March
United Community Against Gay Hate will host a fundraiser event at 6 p.m. at The Bronx on May 31 for the Million Gay March, an event in June commemorating the 40th anniversary of the 1969 Stonewall Rebellion.
Anton Shaw, Gary Floyd and Denise Lee will perform at the fundraising event. The dinner menu includes burgers and fries, chicken wraps and fries, hot dogs and fries, marinara meatloaf, pasta with marinara sauce, chicken sliders and fries, and soup and salad. Speakers from G.E.A.R., Stonewall Democrats of Dallas and the United Community Against Gay Hate will talk about the Million Gay March. For more info, call 214-906-0142.
