Fairway to Equality kicks off with Calcutta caddy auction on Friday
The annual Fairway to Equality golf tournament, a fundraiser for programs of the Human Rights Campaign, kicks off Friday, June 5, with a party and live auction at 6 p.m. at Jack’s Back Yard, and organizers said they are expecting this year’s event to be the most successful so far.
The actual golf tournament begins at noon Sunday, June 7 at Buffalo Creek Golf Course.
Organizers said the tournament is close to sold out, but that golfers and nongolfers alike are invited to attend the Friday night Calcutta Kickoff Celebration and Live Auction. It includes the popular caddy auction, featuring well-known local LGBT community leaders, business owners and elected officials offering themselves up as caddies for Sunday’s tournament. This year’s list of caddies up for auction include HRC President Joe Solmonese, coming in from Washington, D.C. for the event, along with local luminaries Laura Beckham, Anne Fay, Steve Atkinson, Wendy Ringe, John Cramer, Michelle Luna, Jose Gomez and more.
Cathedral of Hope welcoming guest preachers for Pride Month series
The Cathedral of Hope will celebrate national Gay Pride Month in June with a series of sermons on "A Generation of Pride" during its 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. worship services every Sunday this month.
In observance of the 40th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, the Cathedral will welcome several guest preachers to its pulpit to reflect on the past and hopes for the future.
The series begins Sunday, June 7 with "Family Day." The Rev. Jo Hudson, the Cathedral’s senior pastor, will deliver the sermon challenging the congregation to broaden its understanding of family by preaching about what it means to be children of God in a family of faith.
On June 14, the Rev. Bernice Powell Jackson, president of the North American Region of the World Council of Churches, will commemorate Juneteenth. Harry Knox, director of the Religion and Faith Program of the Human Rights Campaign, will speak on June 21. The Rev. Anne Holmes will deliver the sermon on June 28.
The Cathedral of Hope, a congregation of the United Church of Christ, is located at 5910 Cedar Springs Road. All services are free and open to all.
Queer Liberaction taking ‘Milk Box’ out of the gayborhood on Saturday
Queer Liberaction is taking its Milk Box free speech event out of the Cedar Springs gayborhood this weekend for the first time.
The public community forum, named in honor of Harvey Milk, will be set up at 6 p.m. Sunday, June 7, on the southeast corner of the West Village, off McKinney Avenue between Lemmon Avenue East and City Place West.
QL Liberaction Leader Kyle Erwin said Milk Box topics are likely to include marriage equality, the military’s anti-gay "Don’t ask, don’t tell policy," hate crimes and the Obama administrations alleged hesitance to take a more pro-active stance on full equality for all Americans.
