AIDS Interfaith Network receives Black Tie Dinner Volunteer of Year Award
Black Tie Dinner recently honored AIDS Interfaith Network with the 2005 “Volunteer of the Year” award for the third year in a row. AIDS Interfaith Network volunteers donated 139 hours, an estimated value of $2,504, to the Black Tie Dinner.
AIDS Interfaith volunteers have contributed more than 300 volunteer hours for the past three years, an estimated value of $5,981, to Black Tie Dinner.
According to a study by the Institute for Gay and Lesbian Strategic Studies, the typical volunteer in the United States averages 18 hours per month, while LGBT volunteers average 29 hours of service per month.
Black Tie Dinner’s beneficiaries are required to provide a minimum of 40 volunteer hours for the dinner in order to fulfill their beneficiary obligations. In 2005, the beneficiaries provided an average of 72 volunteer hours.
Easter Basket Auction benefiting Resource Center a huge success
The Round-Up Saloon recently hosted its annual Easter Basket Auction and coordinators declared it a success.
The Texas Gay Rodeo Association joined with the Round-Up Saloon and Metro Games to provide basket donations, and the Resource Center of Dallas provided numerous new basket donations this year, bringing in several new companies who had not donated in the past.
More than $21,000 was raised at the Round-Up Saloon auction. Overall, there were more that 80 baskets auctioned off at the Round-Up and at The Hidden Door.
Michael Doughman and Chanel emceed the event on Sunday at the Round-Up. Ron Lynch served as auctioneer. The Tap Dazzlers and Jenna Sky, the reigning Miss Round-Up 2006 provided entertainment for the event.
The Saturday night auction at The Hidden Door gave this year’s fundraiser an added boost. The event was hosted by the T-Bears, who collected several large donations to the project and brought in more than $7,000.
Master Realtors names Oram to be agency’s newest partner
Lory Masters, owner and founder of Master Realtors, Inc., has announced Mark Oram will be the newest partner of Master Realtors, Inc.
Other partners include Todd Elkins, Clay Thornton and Cindy Huitt-Smith.
Oram, an Accredited Buyers Representative and Historic Home Specialist, has been a realtor for more than 25 years and been a sales associate at Master Realtors for the past three years. He has been a consistent top producer representing both buyers and sellers in the Metroplex, Masters said.
Oram specializes in urban areas where he’s purchased and restored many homes to their original 1920s to 1950s condition. He also works with relocation clients purchasing homes in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex.
JR’s hosts 3rd annual bachelor auction to benefit Leukemia, Lymphoma Society
The third annual Gay Bachelor Auction, benefiting the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society will be held this Sunday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at JR’s Bar and Grill on Cedar Springs Road.
Seven bachelors and three bachelorettes will be participating in the auction.
Cathedral of Hope to present “‘Earth Killer’ award to Congressman Barton
Hope for Peace and Justice will present U.S. Representative Joe Barton, chairman of the State House Committee on Energy and Commerce, with its first Earth Killer Award on Sunday during the 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. services.
The Earth Killer Award was created to recognize those who have worked to remove and prevented regulations that would ensure clean air and water for future generations.
Congressman Barton has been invited to attend the ceremony in person, but has not yet accepted the invitation.
The Cathedral of Hope is located at 5910 Cedar Springs Road.
Log Cabin Republicans to hold monthly dinner meeting on Monday
The Log Cabin Republicans of Dallas will hold their monthly dinner meeting on Monday at Mattitos, 3011 Routh St.

“‘Hate Crime’ special premiere set for Thursday in Dallas to benefit HRC
A special premiere screening of the film “Hate Crime” will be held on Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Magnolia Theatre in West Village, 3699 McKinney Ave.
A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Human Rights Campaign. Tickets to the premiere are $15.
The program includes a pre-show presentation, screening of “Hate Crime,” panel discussion and a question-and-answer period with the filmmakers. “Hate Crime” star Seth Peterson, writer/director/producer Tommy Stovall, executive producer Marc Sterling and composer Ebony Tay are expected to attend.
Advance tickets are available at the Magnolia Box office and kiosk only and are not available online or by phone.
Alison to present “‘Reconciliation through Easter Eyes’ at St. Thomas
“Reconciliation through Easter Eyes,” an Easter season presentation by James Alison, author of “The Joy of Being Wrong: Original Sin through Easter Eyes,” will be held next week at St. Thomas the Apostle Episcopal Church, 6525 Inwood Road at Mockingbird Lane. Program dates and times are: April 28, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.; April 29 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.; and April 30 from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.
Admission is a recommended donation of $10 per person, per session, or $35 per person for all four sessions.
“‘Drinks for Dogs’ benefiting SPCA scheduled for May 12 at Sue Ellen’s
The fourth annual “Drinks for Dogs,” a local fundraiser benefiting the SPCA of Texas, will be held on May 12, at Sue Ellen’s 3903 Cedar Springs Road.
Local radio personality Jen Austin will host the event. Patrons can donate to the SPCA through donations, t-shirt sales, raffle prizes and drink specials. Entertainment will include Emily Frye and Kathy Corbin.
Falk slated as guest speaker for chamber’s May dinner meeting
The North Texas GLBT Chamber of Commerce will hold its monthly dinner on May 15 beginning at 6:30 p.m. at Maggiano’s in the Shops at Willow Bend.
Member price is $30; non-members are $35.
The speaker will be Terrell Falk, vice president of marketing and communications for Cinemark Theatres USA, Inc.
Reservations are due by May 8. All chamber events are open to the community.
HIV Prevention Leadership Summit to be held at Hilton Anatole in June
The 2006 HIV Prevention Leadership Summit will be held June 4-7 at the Hilton Anatole Hotel in Dallas.
This year’s Summit will feature institutes, workshops, roundtables and other sessions that are primarily intended for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention grantees, with a major focus on CDC-funded HIV prevention efforts.
The goal of the meeting is to bring together leaders in HIV prevention to disseminate and exchange information to enhance program planning and management.
Tickets for “An Evening with Dr. Maya Angelou” at UNT now on sale
Tickets are now on sale for the fall visit of author Maya Angelou at the University of North Texas.
“An Evening with Dr. Maya Angelou” will take place at the UNT Coliseum at 7 p.m. on Sept. 14. Tickets are $50 for floor seating; $25 for the general public; and $12.50 for UNT faculty and staff, children under 12, senior citizens, and non-UNT students with identification.
