Highland Park Presbyterian to host interactive AIDS exhibit
Highland Park Presbyterian Church will host the educational AIDS exhibit “World Vision Experience: AIDS Step Into Africa,” a multimedia, interactive exhibit focusing on the devastation of the AIDS pandemic as experienced by the children of Africa.
The exhibit allows visitors to step into the lives of children affected by HIV and AIDS in Sub-Saharan Africa, where about 25 million people or two-thirds of the world’s total are infected with HIV.
Visitors will walk through a replica of an African village while listening to a personal audio track relating the story of one of four real children.
The exhibit will be open at the church, 3821 University Blvd., Feb. 1-4, open and free to the public from 8:45 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday.
Turtle Creek Chorale gives donations to Children’s Medical Center
Craig Popkess, executive director for the Turtle Creek Chorale, recently presented a $5,000 check to the Crystal Charity Ball ARCH (At Risk Children) Center at Children’s Medical Center, representing proceeds from the Chorale’s “Children Will Listen” matinee concert in December and charitable contributions made by patrons of all the holiday concerts this past December.
The chorale also facilitated the donation of a brand new refrigerator to the ARCH Center. Donated by a Chorale board member, the new refrigerator will be used to keep juices and other snacks on hand at the ARCH Center. Previously, the clinic had to order snacks from the main kitchen in the hospital and wait for the food and beverages to arrive.
In addition, patrons of the chorale’s six holiday season concerts were asked to bring a new and unwrapped toy or stuffed animal to the concerts, allowing the chorale to distribute an estimated $2,000 worth of toys to patients at Children’s Medical Center. This is the 17th year the chorale has supported Children’s with the toy drive.
2008 Houston Pride Parade applications available online
Pride Houston has announced that applications for the 2008 Houston Pride Parade are now online at www.pridehouston.org, and available for submission.
Deadline for submission is May 1. Any applications not postmarked by that date will be charged a late fee and any application not postmarked by May 15 will be rejected, Pride Houston officials said.
Grand marshal nomination forms are also available online at www.pridehouston.org. The deadline for nominations is Jan. 26.
This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Houston Pride parade, and the theme for this year’s event is “We Are Family,” chosen to celebrate unity and fellowship in the community. The parade will be held June 28 at 8:45 p.m.

Denton County Democrats to hold Annual Chili Supper
The Denton County Democratic Party will host its Annual Chili Supper fundraiser at the Center for Visual Arts in Denton, 400 E. Hickory St. at 6 p.m.
The chili supper is one of the oldest and biggest fundraisers hosted by Denton Democrats. The event attracts about 250 people.
The event this year will feature a candidates forum. All statewide Democratic Party candidates have been invited to speak.
Tickets are $15, and they may be purchased in advance or at the door.
