Valiente will host a party to kick off Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations at Woody’s on Friday, Sept. 14, at 6 p.m. The featured speaker is Dallas County Sheriff Lupe Valdez.
MACT celebrates 25th anniversary with one last plunge for summer
Men of All Colors Together will celebrate its 25th anniversary with a pool party on Sept. 15.
The pool party will be held at 6327 Symphony Lane in East Dallas from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. The party will go on regardless of weather conditions.

Stonewall meeting to feature Valdez, other prominent political figures
Stonewall Democrats of Dallas’ monthly meeting on Sept. 18 will feature Dallas County Sheriff Lupe Valdez, Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund representative Jason Mida and Chris Heinbaugh, chief of staff for the Dallas mayor.
Valdez, who was endorsed by Stonewall Democrats, won the sheriff’s race in 2004. She is the only female sheriff in Texas, and she is the first woman, first Hispanic and first lesbian to be elected sheriff in Dallas County. She will be running for re-election in 2008.
Mida serves as director of the Victory Cabinet of the LGBT political fundraising group, which is based in Washington. He is a native Texan. He became active in politics in high school by volunteering for the Democratic Party.
Heinbaugh is a former Channel 8 television reporter who covered City Hall. He worked as a broadcast journalist for 17 years before retiring to join Mayor Tom Leppert’s staff. He received numerous awards for his work as a journalist.

Valiente, LULAC 4871 meeting to feature state legislator Anchia
Valiente and LULAC 4871 will meet at the John Thomas Gay and Lesbian Community Center on Thursday, Sept. 20, at 6:30 p.m.
The featured speaker will be State Rep. Rafael Anchia. The program is part of the Hispanic Heritage Month celebration.
Oak Lawn Band to perform French favorites in Sept. 22 concert
The Oak Lawn Band will perform “An Evening in France” during a concert on Sept. 22. The concert will feature music by French composers and by others inspired by the French culture.

Log Cabin Republicans meeting to feature Dallas mayor as speaker
Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert will be the featured speaker at Log Cabin Republicans monthly meeting on Sept. 24.
Leppert is expected to address the group about the Trinity River Corridor Project and the upcoming vote in November on whether to eliminate the proposed toll road from the project.
Dallas Councilwoman Angela Hunt, who coordinated a petition drive this year to force the election, spoke to the group about the project last month.
The meeting will be held at Mattito’s Restaurant, 3011 Routh St., on Monday at 7 p.m.
October “‘Shop for a Cause’ day at Macy’s to benefit AIN
AIDS Interfaith Network and Macy’s Northpark will present “Shop for a Cause” on Saturday, Oct. 13.
The event will be in recognition of a national day of support for local nonprofit groups. Macy’s is a longtime supporter of AIN.
For a $5 donation, shoppers will receive a ticket that is worth 10 percent to 20 percent off all purchases that day, $10 off a single $20 purchase and a chance to win a $500 Macy’s gift card.
There will also be entertainment and giveaways all day long.
The proceeds from the ticket donations go to AIN.

Log Cabin “‘Grand Ol’ Party’ to feature gay former military servicemen
Log Cabin Republicans of Dallas’ “Grand Ol’ Party” will focus on the “Don’t ask, don’t tell” policy at its 11th annual black tie fundraising dinner at the Hilton Anatole Hotel on Oct. 20.
The theme of this year’s dinner is “Courage to Lead/Out on the Front.” Alexander Nicholson and Jarrod Chlapowski will tell their stories of service in the military and explain why they believe the anti-gay military policy should be repealed.
Other speakers will include the group’s national president, Patrick Sammon, and Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert.
This year’s theme reflects a lawsuit Log Cabin Republicans filed in 2004 seeking a repeal of the “Don’t ask, don’t tell” policy.
Nicholson is one of the plaintiffs named in the suit.
He was discharged under the policy in 2002 after a fellow service member learned about his sexual orientation. Another plaintiff in the suit is known only as John Doe.
