UNT awards GLBTA scholarships

At the University of North Texas in Denton, Yasmin Furtick, a senior English major from Argyle, and Treavor Wagoner-Knox, a senior communications design major from the central Texas city of West, have been announced as the winners of the 2007-08 Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender and Ally Scholarship in Honor of Mary Finley and Dan Emenheiser.

The scholarship is awarded each year by the UNT Division of Equity and Diversity to a student or students who are either new, transfer or continuing undergraduate students at UNT. This is the third year that the scholarship has been presented but the first that there have been two recipients.

The GLBTA scholarship was endowed in December 2004 by then-UNT staff member Sue Young. It is named in honor of Mary Finley, the assistant director of the UNT University Union and a UNT staff member for more than 20 years, and the late Dan Emenheiser, UNT’s director of diversity education who died in June 2006.

Finley and Emenheiser co-founded the UNT Ally program in 1999. It helps to create an environment free of discrimination and harassment for the LGBT and ally community on the University of North Texas campus.

Tax-deductible donations to the scholarship can be made to the UNT Foundation by referencing the GLBTA Finley/Emenheiser Scholarship. For additional information about donations call 1-800-868-1153 or visit www.unt.edu/development.
