National Latino AIDS Awareness Day rescheduled due to rain
Valiente and its collaborating agencies were forced to cancel plans to hold a free HIV testing event set for last Sunday as part of the National Latino AIDS Awareness Day, and has rescheduled the event for this weekend.
The event has been set now for this Sunday, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., at Bachman Lake.
TGRA elects officers to fill vacancies for 2006, new officers for 2007
The Texas Gay Rodeo Association has announced the results of the recent elections for state officers.
Mike Cox will serve as a vice president and Gary Patton will serve as state secretary for the remainder of 2006.
State officers for 2007 will be Russell Bleakney as state president; Randy Edlin as secretary; Tom Truitt as treasurer; and Lance Thames as state contestant representative.
A run-off election for the office of vice president for 2007, between Mike Cox and Wade Earp, will be held at the November chapter meetings.
Style show to benefit Susan G. Komen Foundation tonight in Fort Worth
A style show benefiting the Susan G. Komen Foundation will be held at 6:30 p.m. tonight at Papparotti’s Wine Room, 6100 Camp Bowie, Ste. 22, in Fort Worth.
The show is being held in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
It will feature models who have survived cancer, wearing clothes from Fancy Lady and with hair and make-up styles by Garrison Moore Salon.
There is no cover charge. Donations will be accepted at the door and throughout the evening. There will be a cash bar and door prizes.

Out & Equal DFW to discussongoing projects at meeting
Out & Equal DFW, a nonprofit organization advocating safe and equitable work spaces for LGBT people, will meet from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday in the Blue and Yellow Room at the John Thomas Gay and Lesbian Community Center, 2701 Reagan St.
The agenda includes discussion of several projects, including an assessment of the DFW Metroplex’s top 10 and top 20 employers, surveying the skills and talents of the organization’s participants and planning a networking event with the DFW-area ERG leaders.
Kul Gallery presents “‘Walk on the Wild Side’ benefit for HRC Foundation
Kul Gallery and Store, 1303 Main St. in downtown Dallas, will present the first “Walk on the Wild Side” benefit event Saturday at 8 p.m.
The event will feature imaginative, one-of-a-kind shoes to be auctioned off to benefit the Human Rights Campaign Foundation.
Designers such as Stuart Weitzman, Oscar de la Renta, Medium, To Boot New York and Sutor Mantelassi have donated shoes to be auctioned off at the event after being transformed into unique creations by a select group of local artists, designers and celebrities.

Hope for Peace and Justice Foundation holding “‘Candidates Day’ at Cathedral
The Hope for Peace and Justice Foundation will hold a “Candidates Day” during the 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. services Sunday at Cathedral of Hope, 5910 Cedar Springs Road. As of last Monday, 21 people including candidates for Dallas County judge, Texas lieutenant governor, and U.S. House of Representatives had confirmed they would attend.
Invitations were extended to the four candidates for governor, foundation officials said. Democrat Chris Bell’s campaign responded positively and is checking for scheduling conflicts before confirming. Gov. Rick Perry’s campaign has refused the invitation.
The Rev. Michael Piazza, president of the foundation, said that Hope for Peace and Justice was founded in part to ensure that the voices of progressive people of faith are heard by politicians and elected officials, so, “It is appropriate for these candidates to worship with us and experience the values of our families first hand.”

Oak Lawn United Methodist Church and the Melrose Hotel are joining forces to present the eighth annual “Taste of Oak Lawn” in the hotel’s ballroom at 7 p.m. Monday.
The event will include a tasting dinner featuring 24 restaurants, a silent auction and a live auction, with all proceeds benefiting the Parish Scholarship Fund. Author coming to Crossroads Market to read from book about death of his partner
Bill Valentine will be at Crossroads Market Bookstore, 3930 Cedar Springs Road, at 7 p.m. on Thursday to read from his new book, “A Season of Grief.”
Valentine wrote the book following the death of his longtime partner in the crash of American Airlines flight 587 in November, 2001. He described “A Season of Grief” as “a memoir of loss, a portrait of a long-term, interracial same-sex relationship and a meditation on the enduring nature of love and life partnership.”
Family Pride presenting Act Out family conference in Dallas next week
Family Pride, a national organization for families headed by LGBT people, will hold the Act Out: The National LGBT Family Conference at the Fairmont Hotel in Dallas Oct. 27-29.
The highlights of the conference will include the presentation of research and information about LGBT-headed families gathered since Family Pride’s Academic Symposium last spring, special workshops and leadership training for youth and adults with LGBT parents led by Children of Lesbians and Gays Everywhere, and regional breakout sessions including training in Family Pride’s “OUTSpoken Families” Speakers Bureau initiative.

WCA holds annual Halloween Jamboree in Swiss Avenue Historic District
The Women’s Communities Association holds its annual Halloween Jamboree Oct. 28, from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m., at 5731 Swiss Avenue.
The event will feature music by Ladies Touch, comedy by Jeannine Baker, contests for the best chili and the best costume, psychics, a silent auction and 13 different chili recipes. Special guests will include members of the newest lesbian group in the area, the Resource Center’s Women’s Group, and those attending can participate in preparing treats for Harryette Ehrhardt’s annual Halloween Trick or Treat Night for neighborhood children.
The jamboree is co-sponsored by Green Mountain Energy and the Durning House Band B in Van Alstyne.

Men of Essence, Women of Distinction join together to present Halloween fundraiser
The Men of Essence and Women of Distinction are joining forces to present the “Old School Halloween Bash” on Oct. 28, from 10 p.m. to 3 a.m., at Abbotsford Court, 14775 Midway Road in Addison.
Costumes from the 1960s and 70s are encouraged, and prizes for the best period costumes will be a

7th annual Goth Ball at Granada Theater to benefit Arts Fighting Cancer
Arts Fighting Cancer, a nonprofit organization that produces Lone Star Drive-in and produced the Deep Ellum Film Festival, will present the seventh annual Goth Ball on Oct. 28, beginning at 8 p.m. at the Granada Theater, 3524 Greenville Ave.
The event boasts Dallas’ largest cash prize for best costume at $1,500 for first place, $300 for second place and $200 for third place. Non-cash prizes will be awarded for creativity, such as “Never Been Seen” and “Best Budget Costume.” There is also a new event this year, the $500 Best Video Art contest which is open to all adults and students in the Metroplex.
Advance tickets are $20 for general admission and $50 for VIP tickets.
General admission tickets at the door will be $25. Proceeds will benefit the Cancer Relief Fund.
Phil Johnson Archives, Library holding fall book sale in November
The Resource Center of Dallas’ Phil Johnson Archives and Research Library will hold a fall book sale Nov. 10-4, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day. The sale will be held at the John Thomas Gay and Lesbian Community Center, 2701 Reagan St., Nov. 1-3, and in front of the Nelson-Tebedo Health Resource Center, 4012 Cedar Springs Road, on Nov. 4.
All proceeds benefit the library and archives.
Patricia Nell Warren to hold book-signing event at community center
Patricia Nell Warren, author of the ground-breaking book the Front Runner, will be signing copies of her new book, “Lavender Locker Rooms,” beginning at 7 p.m. on Nov. 2 at the John Thomas Gay and Lesbian Community Center, 2701 Reagan St.
A portion of the proceeds from book sales at this event will be donated to the Resource Center of Dallas’ Phil Johnson Historic Archives and Research Library.
Dragonflies offer presentation on legal issues for LGBT community
Dragonflies of Dallas, a social and support group for LGBT Asians and Pacific Islanders, will present a seminar entitled “Gay + Legal: The Law and How it Affects You,” at the group’s mixer on Nov. 4.
The event begins at 6 p.m. at the Resource Center of Dallas, 2701 Reagan St. It will feature a moderated panel of three lawyers answering questions and providing information on current legal issues affecting the LGBT community.

Angel Adventure 5K set to raise funds for brain tumor research
The National Brain Tumor Foundation will holds its first Dallas-Fort Worth Angel Adventure 5K fundraising walk on Nov. 4 at Trinity Park in Fort Worth. The event will include an opening program with registration beginning at 8 a.m. on the day of the event. The registration fee is $25 for adults over 18, $15 for students ages 6 to 17, and free for children 5 and under. Adult participants are asked to raise at least $250. Prizes will be awarded to the top fundraising individual and the top fundraising team.
