Young to lead panel discussion on GLBT rights at Sixth Floor Museum
Louise Young, a longtime political and GLBT rights activist, will lead a panel discussion on the gay rights movement in Dallas on Wednesday at the Sixth Floor Museum at Dealy Plaza.
The presentation is part of museum’s “Call to Action” series of free public programs being offered in the seventh floor gallery.
The schedule of interactive programs includes film screenings, gallery talks and panel discussions.
The programs are being presented in conjunction with the “Call to Action” exhibit now on display at the Sixth Floor Museum.
The exhibit, inspired by President John F. Kennedy’s frequent espousal of public service, includes photographs, artifacts, narratives and an extensive timeline spanning the years between 1955 and 1975 intended to illustrate the issues that influenced President Kennedy’s “New Frontier.”
Topics covered range from creation of the Peace Corps to civil rights struggles by African-Americans, Hispanics, women, gays and lesbians and the disabled.
The exhibit runs through October.

McMeans, Jennings presenting recital to raise money for Italy trip
Soprano Mary McMeans and contralto Xan Jennings will perform a benefit recital on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. in the sanctuary of the Cathedral of Hope.
They will be assisted by pianist Brian Bentley.
The event is being held to help offset the two singers’ expenses to participate in the Amalfi Coast Music and Arts Festival in Italy July 14-26.
McMeans and Jennings are students of Barbara Hill Moore at Southern Methodist University and are scholarship singers in the Cathedral of Hope Sanctuary Choir.
While in Italy, they will participate in daily voice lessons, master classes and Italian diction classes, and be coached in the “bel canto” style of singing.
The two will also take part in nightly performances of opera scenes and recitals of arias and art songs.
The recital on Sunday will include music by Vivaldi, well known opera arias such as “Un Bel Di” from “Madame Butterfly,” “Summertime” from “Porgy and Bess,” and art songs and spirituals.
A free-will offering will be taken during the recital.

Artists Against AIDS event set to benefit Tarrant County AIDS Interfaith Network
The 12th annual Artists Against AIDS Silent Art Auction has been scheduled for Oct. 21 at the Fort Worth Community Arts Center.
The event will feature the work of Michael Bane and Sue McCans.
Bane, a native of Kansas, works mainly in acrylics. His work is in many private and corporate collections. He currently is working on an exhibition scheduled for September.
McCans, a native of New Mexico, works mostly in acrylic on paper and canvas. Circles and rings are her primary forms.
She is working on an exhibition of collages using metal and wood also to be shown in September.
Honorary chair is Carter Bowden, owner of Carter Bowden Antiques in Fort Worth and a member of the board for the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth for 10 years.
Proceeds from the event will benefit the Tarrant County AIDS Interfaith Network.
It will include food, music, an open wine and beer bar and the silent auction including works from several local and regional artists in addition to Bane and McCans.
