Kendall to speak at North Texas GLBT chamber meeting on Friday

Kate Kendall, executive director of the National Center for Lesbian Rights, will be the guest speaker at the June luncheon meeting of the North Texas GLBT Chamber of Commerce on Friday.

The meeting begins with networking from 11:30 to noon, and lunch and Kendall’s speech from noon to 1 p.m. It will be held on the 42nd floor of the City Place building, 2711 N. Haskell Ave.

Jason and deMarco to perform at Promise Metropolitan Community Church

Christian pop duo Jason and deMarco will perform Friday at 7 p.m. at Promise Metropolitan Community Church in Oak Cliff. The performance is free, but a love offering will be taken up to help defray the duo’s travel costs.

Jason Warner and deMarco DeCiccio have been performing together since 2001 and have recorded three albums. Their latest album, “Till the End of Time,” is scheduled to be released June 27. They perform in various venues around the country and have performed at the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force Awards in Los Angeles, the Equality California Awards in Palm Springs and the Human Rights Campaign Gala in New York.

First Unitarian presents appearance by Kendall, Minter of lesbian rights center

Kate Kendall, executive director of the National Center for Lesbian Rights, and Shannon Minter, legal director for the organization, will speak at 11 a.m. Saturday at First Unitarian Church of Dallas, 4015 Normandy Ave., on “State of the Nation: LGBT Hopes, Needs and Fears.”

Charles McMullen, director of adult religious education at the church, said the presentation is intended to foster dialogue about the civic responsibility church members share to ensure the wellbeing of GLBT people in North Texas.

Promise MCC holds Bingo event to raise money for Oak Cliff Church

Promise Metropolitan Community Church in Oak Cliff will hold a Charity Bingo fundraiser on Saturday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Bingo Bills, 3235 S. Loop 12 (I-45 at Loop 12) in Dallas. Come early. Bingo will begin promptly at 4 p.m. Food, drinks and desserts will be available for purchase. The event will also include silent and live auctions.

Human Rights Campaign holding forum to bring in new supporters

The Human Rights Campaign will hold an open forum at the John Thomas Gay and Lesbian Community Center on Saturday at 10 a.m.

The presentation will include an overview of the gay political organization and its activities on the local and national scene. Coordinators will also talk about how individuals can get involved as volunteers in the November election.
Donuts and coffee will be served.

Civil rights leader to preach at Cathedral of Hope for Juneteenth service

Civil rights leader the Rev. Peter Johnson will be the guest preacher for the 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. services Sunday at Cathedral of Hope in honor of Juneteenth.

Johnson grew up in a family committed to the civil rights movement. He became more involved in 1958 after meeting Rosa Parks and becoming president of the youth chapter of the NAACP. In 1960, he was one of the youngest leaders of the student sit-in movement, and he became nationally known as a student leader while attending Southern University in Baton Rouge.

Johnson joined the Freedom Ride and began working full time for the Congress of Racial Equality under the leadership of James Farmer. Johnson also joined the Southern Christian Leadership Conference as the youngest man on the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s staff. He also worked with Andrew Young, Jesse Jackson, Julian Bond, John Lewis, Stokely Carmichael and H. Rapp Brown, and helped organize the 1963 March on Washington.

Johnson was arrested more than 100 times, attacked by dogs in Birmingham, Ala., hospitalized six times and suffered a coma twice. He continues his commitment today to non-violence and civil rights with the Peter Johnson Institute of Non-Violence and the Dallas Common.

Stonewall Democrats meeting features former Log Cabin Republican officials

Stonewall Democrats of Dallas will host a panel discussion on Tuesday with three ex-Log Cabin Republican leaders who will discuss why they left the Republican Party.

The panelists, Keith Pomykal, former chairman of Log Cabin Republicans of Dallas; Andy Smith, former national secretary and vice president of Log Cabin Republicans; and Paul von Wupperfeld, former state president of Log Cabin Republicans of Texas; will also discuss the differences between the party platforms of the Texas Democratic Party and the Texas Republican Party approved and the groups’ conventions earlier this month.

The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. at Ojeda’s Restaurant, 4617 Maple Ave.

Women’s Chorus closes season with “‘Seasonal Blend’ concert

The Women’s Chorus of Dallas, under the direction of Melinda Imthurn, presents its final concert of the season June 24, at 8 p.m. at the Caruth Auditorium at Southern Methodist University. The title of the concert is “Seasonal Blend.”

Art4Life show and auction set to benefit AIDS Arms LifeWalk

Art4Life reception and art show will be held June 29 from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Gossip bar in the Hilton Anatole Hotel, 2201 Stemmons Frwy., to benefit AIDS Arms LifeWalk.

The event will feature the art work of Baron Farha, Valery Guignon, Corey Johnson and Jason Wilson. It will include a silent auction. Proceeds from all sales will be split between the artist and AIDS Arms.
