Valiente, GLAAD present workshop on combating defamation in the media
Valiente, an organization for GLBT Latinos, and the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation will present a workshop on recognizing and combating anti-GLBT bias in the media from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at the Latino Cultural Center, 2600 Live Oak St. in Dallas.
The workshop will address topics including recognizing anti-GLBT defamation and ways to contact and engage the media, developing a community/media plan, framing an issue, getting media visibility for an issue or event, understanding the role of public opinion polls, interviewing skills and how to develop interview sound bites.

AIDS Interfaith holds annual charity garage sale on Saturday
AIDS Interfaith Network holds its second annual Charity Garage Sale on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at City Church, 3601 Routh St., Suite 110. The sale will include clothing, books, knickknacks, furniture and more.

AIDS Interfaith Network, Phases hold “‘Rainbow Speed Dating’ event
AIDS Interfaith Network and Phases nightclub will hold a “Rainbow Speed Dating” event at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at Phases, 2615 Oak Lawn Ave. This event if for women only, but a second “Rainbow Speed Dating” event for gay men is being planned for July.
The event will include 20 women, aged 21 and up, meeting for four minute “mini-dates,” after which they fill out confidential scorecards rating their interest in further dates which each other. At the end of the evening, scores will be tallied and the results will be e-mailed to participants the next day.
The entry fee is $20 and includes snacks and drink specials. All proceeds benefit AIDS Interfaith Network. Register and pay online at www.aidsinterfaithnetwork.org. Payment will also be accepted at the door.
CORRECTIONS AND CLARIFICATIONS
An item on Page 33 of last week’s issue mistakenly identified Dave Stovall of Fort Worth whose “Blue Saloon” was scheduled to be screened at the Q Cinema monthly film series as the filmmaker of “Hate Crime.” The correct name of the writer, director and producer of “Hate Crime” is Tommy Stovall, according to Mark Sterling, the executive producer of the film. Sterling said Dave Stovall was not involved with the film “Hate Crime.”
In the 2006 Voice of Pride schedule that appeared on Page 42 of last week’s issue, the address for the June 8 preliminary contest at Illusions was incorrect. The correct address should have been 4100 Maple Ave.
