Oak Lawn Band concert
When Oak Lawn Band performed at President Barack Obama’s 2012 inauguration, Artistic Director Tim Norris was inspired by a line in the inaugural speech.

“We, the people, declare today that the most evident of truths — that all of us are created equal — is the star that guides us still; just as it guided our forebears through Seneca Falls, and Selma and Stonewall,” Obama said in his inaugural address.

“I was touched to hear him say Stonewall,” Norris said. “Finally a president has outwardly addressed and supported that part of me that I spent so many childhood years denying out of fear that this moment would never come.”

He decided to do a concert on this theme.

“I constructed this program to celebrate the strides that we have made in achieving a reality of that truth that has merely been evident — we are ALL created equal,” he said. “These pieces of music are to serve as a call to action for each of us stand up and march for the freedom of others.”

Oak Lawn Band performs March to Freedom: An Unfinished Journey celebrates the struggles and triumphs on the path to equal human rights. Music includes an Aaron Copland tribute, “Glamazon” from RuPaul’s Drag Race, “A Movement for Rosa,” “Somewhere” from West Side Story, “Trail of Tears,” selections from Queen and more.

Cathedral of Hope, 5910 Cedar Springs Road. March 29 at 7 p.m. Free. RSVP requested at MarchForFreedom.Eventbrite.com.
