Victim glad to see hate crimes bill advance

My name is Christopher McKee, and in December 2005, I was attacked in Denton. A highly publicized hate crime assault case took place in connection with the case, and the defendant was found not guilty.

I am so, so, so thrilled to see the bill to establish a committee to study the effectiveness of the James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Bill voted out of committee in the Texas House, and wanted to thank Dallas Voice for printing a story on it ("Hate crimes study clears committee," Dallas Voice, March 13).

Wow! It’s amazing what perseverance will do!

Kudos for reporting on Rep. Jared Polis

Good for John Wright and Dallas Voice for sticking to your guns with the reporting on Congressman Jared Polis’ recent gaffe ("Openly gay congressman didn’t know status of federal hate crimes legislation," Instant Tea blog, DallasVoice.com).

Of course you had to report the story. That’s what the press is supposed to do.
Hate crimes, too, is a big issue for Texas. And the new congressman is learning.

Thanks for Defining Homes

I really liked the most recent issue of Defining Homes in the Dallas Voice. All of the articles were thoughtful and well written. Kudos to whomever oversaw production of the magazine.

To send a letter
We welcome letters from readers. Shorter letters are more likely to be printed, as are those that address only a single topic. On some weeks we receive more letters than we can print. In that case, we print a representative sample. Letters are subject to editing for length and clarity, but we attempt to maintain the writer’s substance and tone. Include your home address and a daytime phone number for verification. Send letters to the senior editor, preferably by e-mail (editor@dallasvoice.com). Letters also may be faxed (214-969-7271) or mailed (Dallas Voice, 4145 Travis St., Third Floor, Dallas, TX 72504).
