Just in time for Mother’s Day, women armed with six-strings, keyboards and bass drums take the stage at the second annual Dallas Mamapalooza on Saturday.
The first Mamapalooza started in New York in 2002 as an outlet for creative mothers who wanted to capture that visceral experience of living large and rocking out. Now the Mamapalooza explosion has kicked up festivals in Chicago, Nashville, Los Angeles, Detroit, Toronto and Big D.
On Saturday, five local acts, all fronted by women, perform 45-minute sets of acoustic folk and rock. Dallas Voice faves Bandmates are the finale act. Partners Susan Carson and Kimberly Cody craft a laid-back, slowcore sound that harkens back to that halcyon era of “’80s college rock.

Zoe Lewis at Uncle Calvin’s
U.K. native Zoe Lewis now lives in Provincetown, Cape Cod. Described as “a band in a body,” this lesbian musician plays jazz, jump jive, Latin grooves, swing, international folk and funk originals on instruments ranging from piano to spoons to the ukulele.
Her latest CD “Small is Tremendous” is on Judy Collins’ Wildflower label, and this summer, Lewis will touring with Nanci Griffith. On Friday, she plays an intimate gig at Uncle Calvin’s Coffeehouse, inside North Park Presbyterian Church, 9555 N Central Expy. May 11 at 8 p.m. $15. 214-363 0044.
