The Legacy of Success Foundation will present its second annual Linen Brunch on Saturday, Aug. 25, at Creative Events of Dallas, 1333B Oak Lawn.

The theme for the event is “Tropical Twist,” and those attending are encouraged to wear white.

A portion of the proceeds from the event will help support the Hazel Hatcher Scholarship Fund.

The winner of this year’s scholarship is Venton C. “Carlos” Jones Jr.

A native of Dallas, Jones received his bachelor’s degree in community health from Texas A&M last year, and is now working on his master’s degree in health care administration at the University of Texas in Arlington.

Jones works as a volunteer community outreach specialist with Abounding Prosperity, Inc., and has been involved in HIV/STD prevention and education since 2004. He currently serves on the Texas HIV/STD Prevention Planning Group and is focused on HIV education and prevention efforts in the African-American community.

“I believe it is important to have educational activities that can effectively reach the community we are serving,” Jones said. “I hope that my work will help bridge the gap between service providers and community members.”

“With the advancement in HIV care and services in the community, we are no longer living in a time were HIV is a death sentence,” Jones continued. “Youth in the GLBT community are rapidly becoming infected and services must be adjusted to deal with the mental health impact of coping with a chronic health condition. Also, prevention efforts must be appropriate at targeting this population. If we are to see a decline of new HIV infections, we must consider taking a more holistic approach to this matter.”

In his free time, Jones enjoys traveling, cooking and music.

The first Hazel Hatcher Scholarship was awarded last year to Manyonge Jarret Makokha, a student majoring in science at the University of Texas at Dallas.

The foundation is still accepting last-minute sponsorships for the brunch.

Officials said donations of any amount are appreciated, and all donors will be recognized at the event.

Donations to Legacy of Success Foundation can be mailed to Legacy of Success Foundation, P.O. Box 190313, Dallas, Texas 75219.

The Linen Brunch begins at 11:30 a.m. and will be hosted by David Lewis.
