Dallas resident and former first lady Laura Bush told CNN’s Larry King on Tuesday that she supports equal rights for same-sex couples. King asked Bush about a passage from her recent book in which she said she asked her husband not to make a “significant issue” out of gay marriage during the 2004 campaign. The full clip is above. Here’s my transcript:
King: “Do you think we should have it (gay marriage)?”
LB: “I think that we ought to definitely look at it, and I’ve debated. I think there are a lot of people who have trouble coming to terms with that because they see marriage as traditionally between a man and a woman, but I also know that when couples are committed to each other and love each other, they ought to have, I think, the same sort of rights that everyone has.”
King: “So would that be an area where you (and George) disagree?”
LB: “I guess that would be an area that we disagree. I understand totally what George thinks and what other people think about marriage being between a man and a woman, and it’s a real reversal … to accept gay marriage.”
King: “But you do?”
LB: “But I think we could. I think it’s also a generational thing.”
King: “You think it’s coming?”
LB: “Yeah, that (it) will come.”
who knew Laura Bush was such a fag hag! Looks like living in Dallas and reading the Voice is rubbing off on her! u go John
Thanks for speaking up now that you 1) have no influence anyone, 2) have let the time to make a difference when it mattered pass, 3) have a book to sell.
Contemptible! This for a man who will be remembered as one of history’s leading bigots (not to mention leading liars). This is called “distancing.” Laura is trying to pick and choose those elements of George’s legacy to be tarred and feathered with. Peddle it to someone who’s buying it, baby!
I think she always supported equal rights. It’s not her fault that her husband doesn’t. I like her.
Welcome to the year 2010 Laura! Tell you hubby to move to Iraq…..you know.. the place he
“liberated”.
The 2004 election was all about Anti-gay ballot initiatives in 11 swing states. Yet she was against the whole ploy that got her husband elected to a second term? REALLY? How does she sleep at night? I hope the money she’s making on this book can buy her soul back.
Laura Bush is Dallas’ own Eva Braun.
@Chris–I almost replied that she couldn’t afford to allow her husband to lose either of the 2000 or 2004 elections. Then I suddenly remembered that he didn’t actually win either one of them. Silly me!
Call me simple-minded if you wish, but I’m just going to graciously accept her support. We need all the help we can get, and she just as easily could have ignored the subject altogether. Her remarks can only help us at this point. I had heard that both she and her daughters strongly disagreed with old George on this subject. Guess those sources who claimed to know some insiders in their personal circle knew what they were talking about.
@ David – I agree with you. If anything supporting gay marriage would cost her sales of her book. I don’t believe that is even a factor though. She is saying what she believes to be right. Which is what we all believe. Instead of “punishing” her, why not embrace her and move forward? It is not about constantly fighting against the “evil” powers that be, but trying to show them the way….
She is tryinig to sell books.
Basically she is gay for pay.
You bitchy queens are beginning to get on my gay nerves. Thank God, it’s finally cocktail hour.
Thank you, David. I just made that very statement to myself. Why don’t you come on over to our house in Preston Hollow for a little drinky, dear? Frankly, I could use the company. George has become such a bore since he quit drinking.
David,
Then we can go driving around and ignore all the stop signs.
Laura and David,
In case you decide to go down to Oak Lawn tonight, let the Secret Service agents drive. And for God’s sake, if the girls go with you don’t let them start doing those damn jello shots again. The last thing we need is photographs in the National Enquirer of them dancing topless at Sue Ellens. In fact, don’t go there at all. Stay at J.R.’s or the Round-Up. If anything comes up about it, we can say you were just attending your hairdresser’s birthday party.
At least some humor exists. True, she COULD have spoken out sooner. And I seem to remember knowing this back then. It doesn’t really matter what either of them think. With social issues you tend to have your finger on the pulse of popular opinion. With this hot button topic, people were scared to even think about homosexuals much less them getting married or adopting. Politics is nothing more than a people pleasing scheme. Try to get the most people to like you by praying on their fears or insecurities. Going into Iraq? I know, let’s use this 9/11 attack as an excuse to finish daddies job. Fear let a man invade a country under false pretenses. And also True. She didn’t have to say anything at all about the issues. True it might draw a more lefty crowd to buy her book but it would sure scare off a lot of the repubs as well. And I think she has always had a gay following. At least from what I read. But pay attention to what she says about it being a “generational” thing. True dat!! It’s a coming!
