Valiente has announced its schedule of events to be held during Hispanic Heritage Month, Sept. 15 to Oct. 15.

Former gay Dallas City Council member John Loza will speak to the general meeting of Valiente at Havana, 4006 Cedar Springs Road, on Sept. 21 at 6:30 p.m. Loza was the first gay Latino elected to the City Council in Dallas.

A poetry slam will be held at Suenos Sabrosos, 408 N. Bishop Ave., Suite 105, on Sept. 30 at 6 p.m. Anyone interested in participating should contact Fernando Sanchez at fsanchez@aidsarms.org. Readers should provide the poem’s name, information about the author and a short biography of themselves. The deadline for registering is Sept. 15.

An art show will be held at Suenos Sabrosos on Oct. 8 at 4 p.m. Latino artists who want to join the show should contact Jesse Garcia at jgarcia71@aol.com by Sept. 15.

The featured speaker for Valiente’s October meeting will be Mercedes Olivera, a Latino columnist for The Dallas Morning News. The meeting will be at Havana on Oct. 19 at 6:30 p.m.

Plans are underway for a gay Latino film to be showcased at a local theater Sept. 20-24.

Valiente will coordinate an HIV-testing location during National Latino AIDS Awareness Day on Oct. 15, and the group will be participating in LifeWalk on Oct. 1.

Valiente will also participate in the Alan Ross Texas Freedom Parade on Sept. 17. A rally in Lee Park follows the parade.
