Media outlets around the world are reporting that Houston has elected an “openly gay mayor.” Technically, of course, this is inaccurate. Houston hasn’t elected a gay mayor; it has elected a lesbian mayor. I’ve heard some spirited debate already today about whether it’s appropriate or offensive to call Annise Parker gay, even if it’s just to save space in a headline. But I was curious to know what our readers think.
I agree with Tammye.
Wow, I can see why this would cause debate. My opinion would be how does the person want to be referred to?
Personally, I have always considered gay to be inclusive. Lesbian is gender specific, but I don’t think gay is. Gay means homosexual, not just male homosexual
I think gay is a perfectly acceptable term to use for a homosexual female. I personally understand why it’s used to save space. I call myself gay just because it’s shorter and easier.
I agree with Tammye also. Didn’t know this was even an issue.
Another vote for Tammye. (Since I couldn’t vote for Annise.) Like Joanna, I call myself “gay,” too.
Considering what we’ve been called in the past, I think Tammye’s right.
I briefly panicked when I read this blog post. My fear of saying the right thing the wrong way and being labeled as insensitive or bigoted is indescribable. But I let out a huge sigh of relief when I saw Tammye’s response. I also thought “gay” was gender neutral, and I’m glad to see five other people think so too. Whew!
I have many lesbian friends, and they all say they are gay, but they also call themselves lesbian, depending on the circumstances and the company. I believe Tammye is correct, gay refers to homosexuality.
