Employees of a Crossfit gym in Indianapolis have been quitting their jobs, and patrons have been canceling their memberships since the gym canceled a scheduled Pride workout, according to ABC IndyChannel 6 News. And now CrossFit has reportedly suspended its top spokesman, Russell Berger, after Berger sent out a tweet saying he believes that “celebrating ‘pride’ is a sin.”

Ryan Nix, a member of Crossfit Infiltrate in Indianapolis, told the local TV station that he had planned a special workout last week at the gym to celebrate LGBT Pride month But then he got an email from the gym’s general manager, Brandon Lowe, telling him the workout had been cancelled.

According to reports, Lowe told Nix that the gym was for “total health,” and that Pride prevents people from seeing themselves “as God truly defines them to be.”

Lowe wrote to Nix, “Our underlying goal for the staff and members at CrossFit Infiltrate and our other gyms CrossFit White River and University Ave CrossFit is total health and well-being for the individual and community. Total health involves the body, the emotions, relationships and the spirit. At the foundational detractor from health, as we believe God sets the parameters for, is pride. We believe that true health forever can only be found within humility, not pride. Humility is seeing oneself as they truly are, and as God truly defines them to be. As a business we will choose to deploy our resources towards those efforts and causes that line up with our own values and beliefs.

“Of course we will continue [to] treat anyone and everyone with the same respect and provide the same service at CrossFit Infiltrate to anyone that wishes to take part.”

A statement to the local TV news station the gym owners said CrossFit Infiltrate “has a history of welcoming and serving people training to be fit. The gym never has and never will be anything but welcoming to all human beings who live, move and breathe and God’s world.”

Several former employees have said they will be offering the Pride workout Thursday, June 7, at an outdoor location.

Meanwhile, officials at CrossFit Inc. have reportedly suspended the company’s chief knowledge officer, Russell Berger, after he tweeted — shortly after noon today — that celebrating Pride “is a sin.”

“As someone who personally believes celebrating ‘pride’ is a sin, I’d like to personally encourage #CrossFitInfiltrate for standing by their convictions and refusing to host an @indypride workout. The intolerance of the LGBTQ ideology toward any alternative views is mind-blowing,” Berger wrote, in a tweet time stamped for June 6, 12:25 p.m.

And in a tweet time stamped 10 minutes later, at 12:35 p.m., Berger replied to @CybbiB and @indypride with another tweet: “Allow me to double-down. I believe @indypride is a celebration of sin, as do most Christians. I deleted this and reposted a different version to make sure it’s clear these are my personal beliefs, you know, since the Twitter mobs are hard at work trying to get me fired.”

And in a tweet posted about 4 p.m. on the official CrossFit Twitter feed, Berger’s suspension was announced: “Effective immediately, Russell Berger has been placed on unpaid leave while management completes a thorough review.”

At about 1 p.m., the Crossfit Twitter account posted a tweet reading, “‘I am crazy proud of the gay community in CrossFit.’ — @CrossFitCEO”
