The three were part of a group of 12 University of Missouri students who came to North Texas as part of the school’s student-led Alternative Spring Break program to volunteer in programs serving people who are homeless or living in poverty. Six of the students worked RCD’s hot meals lunch line on Tuesday while the other six worked at RCD’s AIDS food pantry. The group was scheduled to work at the RCD programs again on Wednesday, and also volunteered with Reconciliation Outreach and with Dallas Life during the week. Site leader Sara Dumstorff said that the group that came to North Texas was one of nine participating in the Alternative Spring Break program this year. She said RCD was chosen as one of the organizations the group would work with because "a large number of the students in the group voted for it." Dumstorff also said that competition to participate in the Alternative Spring Break program at the university "was pretty stiff this year," leading student organizers to hope that even more groups can be formed next year.
