About 20 people attended a DOMA protest organized by Queer Liberaction on Saturday in the plaza of the Records Building in downtown Dallas. A group of about 10 Christian counterprotesters, who reportedly read about the event in Dallas Voice, gathered on the other side of Main Street. There was a minor confrontation when one of the counterprotesters, who identified herself as 38-year-old Angela Cummings of Irving, came over and stood among the LGBT protesters with a Bible (see photos above). Mike McKay, executive director of the Resource Center of Dallas, who was addressing the LGBT protesters through a megaphone, immediately noticed Cummings and singled her out. A few of the LGBT protesters got in Cummings’ face before a police officer came over and asked her to leave, and she went back to the other side of the street. Later, the LGBT protesters lined the north side of Main Street facing the counterprotesters and chanted back at them. Finally, after the LGBT protesters retreated to the other side of the plaza, the counterprotesters went home. More photos after the jump. The counterprotesters appeared to be led by Joe Oden (center in red jacket), a minister at Heartland World Ministries Church in Las Colinas. Oden is the same person who organized so-called “purity sieges” on the Cedar Springs strip in 2007. For more on that, go here.
