According to the Dallas Morning News, Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison recommended Robert Pitman to be U.S. attorney for the Western District of Texas. Sen. John Cornyn has also endorsed Pitman.
Pitman is gay.
The story in the Morning News suggests that the appointment has irked social conservatives in her party.
However, a story in the San Antonio Express-News mentions the appointment without talking about his sexual orientation.
Home state senators can theoretically block a nomination for U.S. attorney, so their backing is key for Pitman to be appointed to the position. However, the state’s Democratic congressional delegation is backing another candidate, Michael McCrum, who’s also been recommended by Hutchison and Cornyn, so it would appear as though McCrum has the inside track.

Kay, honey, you are fabulous! I wish I could figure out how to look as good as you do when I perform in drag and heels. Damn. My point here is that being gay should not qualify you for a job, and being straight should not disqualify you. So who cares if this guy is what he is. God made us this way and I am getting more excited now about voting for Kay! I always figured Ricky was playing for our side and I’ve met many a boy who have the stories to tell. But despite our governor being gay, I just can’t vote for someone who parades around as a homophobe. Kay is my girl.
The point in the Morning News story is that the far right is pissed at Kay for supporting someone who is openly gay. Being gay certainly doesn’t qualify him, but to many right wingers being gay automatically DISqualifies him. What qualifies him is all of his experience.
