U.S. Representative Eddie Bernice Johnson is known as a champion of civil rights for all.

The Human Rights Campaign announced this week that it is endorsing U.S. Representative Eddie Bernice Johnson in recognition of her “leadership on behalf of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender Americans.”

The Dallas Democrat faces Republican challenger Wilson Aurbach in the November mid-term elections. Joe Solmonese, president of the Human Rights Campaign, said Johnson has earned a score of 100 percent on the organization’s score card each year since she was first elected to the U.S. House in 1992.

Solmonese called Johnson a “longtime civil rights champion and a leading voice for fairness in Congress.”

“From her leadership on ensuring students are free from bullying and anti-gay discrimination in their schools to her consistent support on all our key legislation, Representative Johnson is a true ally and friend,” Solmonese said. “The Human Rights Campaign family in Washington and Dallas is proud to be endorsing [her] in her re-election bid.”

It is the fourth time the organization has endorsed Johnson.

According to a written statement by the Human Rights Campaign, Johnson’s record includes voting against an anti-gay-marriage amendment to the U.S. Constitution; co-sponsoring and voting for employment non-discrimination bills including GLBT people; co-sponsoring and voting for hate crimes protections for GLBT people; and voting against a proposal preventing courts from hearing challenges to anti-gay-marriage laws.
