George Mason University has a new Homecoming Queen, and her name is Reann Ballslee — except when she takes off her dress and becomes Ryan Allen.
Students at the school in suburban Washington, D.C., elected Allen’s drag persona Reann as homecoming queen during half time at a sold-out basketball game against Northeastern University last Saturday. And Reann, wearing a gold sequined top, accepted.
“I was very touched by how Mason was so supportive through the whole process of allowing a boy in a dress to run for homecoming queen,” Allen said in a phone interview. “It says a lot about the campus that not only do we have diversity but we celebrate it.”
