On Tuesday, voters repealed the Houston Equal Rights Ordinance. Critics immediately pounced on the decision on social media, using the hashtag #BoycottHouston and petitioning the NFL to reject Houston’s Super Bowl bid.
Yet amidst the defeat, some people remained quippy.
Take Houston native Kelly Lauren, seen to the right. The transgender performer now living in Chicago posted a photo of her standing in the middle of a men’s bathroom, surrounded by guys who are all eyeing her. The caption reads: “Houston, do you REALLY want me in the same restroom as your husband or boyfriend?”
In another Facebook post, Krystal Summers of Dallas posted the status seen below:
Lexie Cannes, a transwoman and activist, didn’t just quip; she proposed a plan of action. On her blog she suggests enlisting transmen to “launch a massive invasion of public female bathrooms in Houston with reporters in tow. Trans men now have a legal right to be in the ladies’ room. So, lets serve it up and let them have it.”
Throughout the campaign, opponents referred to HERO as “the bathroom bill.” Should it pass, they argued, men would be allowed in women’s bathrooms. Whether or not the trans baiting strategy worked or, if as some contend, supporters ran a lackluster campaign remains unclear. While opponents may have secured a victory, as supporters say, the election results may come back to bite them in the ass regardless of the restroom.
