Terry McMillan’s ex becomes author, makes Southern Pride appearance

Nothing scares Oprah’s demographic more than closeted men who marry women. Jonathan Plummer became the poster dude for that hysterical movement.
Plummer was the handsome inspiration for Terry McMillan’s “How Stella Got Her Groove Back.” And when he came out as gay, the May-December romance turned grotesque: Plummer filed a $40 million defamation lawsuit, and McMillan began regularly referring to Plummer as a “faggot.”
But the story doesn’t end there because Plummer has his own book out, “Balancing Act” (Simon Spotlight, $16.99) about a young Jamaican sugar cane peddler who’s spotted by a brash, older modeling scout.

This weekend, Plummer visits Dallas Southern Pride to promote his novel and to discuss the different episodes of his life and his decision to finally reveal his sexual identity to his former wife. Plummer’s spicy tale is certainly stirring the “down low” pot: At least one bookstore in Oakland, Ca., has refused to carry it for “personal reasons.”
