We weren’t lucky enough to receive an advance copy of Gov. Rick Perry’s new book, Fed Up!, so for now we’ll just have to rely on other media outlets around the state who’ve posted excerpts. Thus far, we haven’t seen any examples of overt gay-bashing by Perry in the book, but we did notice what we’re sure is one of many major factual issues, so we thought we’d go ahead and issue a clarification. According to the Austin American-Statesman, Perry writes the following in Fed Up:
“If you don’t support the death penalty and citizens packing a pistol, don’t come to Texas. If you don’t like medicinal marijuana and gay
marriage, don’t move to California.”
This quote is really a variation on something Perry said several years ago, when asked what he would tell gay and lesbian veterans returning from Iraq who wanted to wed: “If there is some other state that has a more lenient view than Texas, then maybe that’s a better place for them to live.” In other words, Perry’s message to gay people is, “If you don’t like how we treat you in Texas, move somewhere else.” And his message to straight people is, “If you hate gay people, move to Texas.”
If Perry really believes that people should only live in states where they agree with all the laws, then we suppose he’s entitled to his opinion. But at the very least, we think he should get his facts straight.
Same-sex marriage isn’t legal in California, governor, and it hasn’t been since November 2008, when voters approved something called Proposition 8. Sound familiar? Yes, marriage was legal briefly during the summer of 2008, and the constitutionality of Prop 8 is currently being challenged in federal court. But no, same-sex marriage is not legal in California, so ultimately your statement doesn’t make much sense. Perhaps what you meant to say was, “If you don’t like gay marriage, don’t move to Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont or the District of Columbia.”
Also, if you really hate the federal government so much, governor, we’d suggest you consider moving to a country that’s more in line with your views. We hear Iran is nice.
He hates the federal government so much, he is planning on being your next vice-president.
PIece of crap. Hispanics in Texas should be ashamed for letting this happen.
Rick Perry: anti-Obama, anti-socialist, conservative warrior. Gonna kick B. Hussein’s butt outta DC in ’12. Perry for President! Woohoo!!!
Tom P, are you blaming hispanics for Rick Perry? I’m sure plenty of other races voted for him, too!
L’il Carl, your threat on Rick Perry’s life might, and should, get you arrested.
I think it’s an excellent idea to keep likeminded political views in the same environment. The republicans should be happy as pigs in sht living together in the pig sht state of Texas. California will continue to attract cool people, talent, and creativity. Let the pig sht state of Texas become the bigoted dust bowl it deserves to become.
SF, that says it all. Bet you’re proud of your whackos like Pelosi, Boxer, Feinstein, et.al, and now you’ve even brought back Jerry Brown, for Chrissake. You deserve what you get.
Don’t wanta hear other views, huh? Just like a liberal!
Perry and GOP are going extreme Nazi terroristic in their style. They were extreme unpatriotic mentally challenged before with all their business school flunkees policies by resorting to scapegoating people (even if you don’t like their lifestyle) is hardcore Neo-Radical. Rick Perry forgets he’s a cheerleader with over styled hair and Senator Craig was a gay man in Republican ranks. Rick Perry also forgets there are so many stories going on of clergy sexually abusing minors or gay. Yep, sexual predators tend to congregate in the conservative side because they can prey on victims easier. Voter’s are concerned with why he created a $21 billon budget mess in Texas, why job losses are the highest in 20 years, and why homeowners insurance is twice the national average. Texans are concerned with why he’d doing the talk show circuit while Texas is in a self created GOP fiscal mess and how the no solutions Neo-KKK-Cons got into power again?
John Boehmer looks like Pee Wee Herman. How can anyone take GOP seriously. They are not about working they are about extreme division and have their own clowns in GOP ranks.
Let’s see: “pigs in sht”, “pig sht state”, “bigoted”, “Nazis”, “mentally challenged”, “flunkees”, “Neo-Radical”, “over-styled hair”, “Neo-KKK-Cons”, “looks like Pee Wee Herman”, “clowns”.
Cheerleader, you and SF personify the liberal approach to discussion: name calling.
Let’s check the IP address and see who “PerryFor Prez” is? Sounds like a trouble maker to me!
I think you people missed the point. The American people have allowed our government to become the mess that it is by being oblivious and complacent. There is a saying in the military “Complacentcy Kills!” While life was good in the days my generation was enjoying high school, we didn’t learn about bad politics because there just wasn’t any need to fuss about it. Mr. Perry and many others who recognize the corruption and destruction of our freedoms is in a position to make a change. If you don’t hate how the Feds are running this country, then you just aren’t paying attention or don’t know your history enough to know the deserted path we are traveling; the same Rome did. Mr. Perry knows there is hope for democracy and knows that our history tells us socialism cannot work practically. He doesn’t hate this country, he loves it and that is why he has so much disdain for the federal government because they are essentially destroying this great nation and using the ignorance of the people to forward a massive beurocracy so they can keep all the money for themselves. WAKE UP!
SF,
I am a Texan stationed in CA and while I love it here, this is no place to raise a family. It does not attract “cool” people, it attracts lost souls who know the west coast will turn a blind eye to homelessness, drug use, and moochers. This state is broker than broke, it continually steals money from the educations system and your public servents. The people allow for artistic views yes, but the priority of preparing for the future of the state is not even considered. A government cannot be run efficiently and effectively with free love and pot. I surmise you have never been to Texas and while that may not change your view, you shouldn’t make up opinions of things of which you know nothing about. Texas and other southern states will continue to produce hard working and productive members of society and be the most economically stable state in the Union while California remains in the clouds. What a waste of such a beautiful place.
Perry hates DC so much, he’d sell his soul to the devil to get there. His latest anti-government program he wants to get rid of in Texas is Medicaid. So all of you gun-totin’, bible thumpin’ Perry lovers beware. He’s going to kick your grandma out of her nursing home and take away health insurance for children (while he lives like a king in Austin). We’ll then see how much you really like taking care of yourselves without government help. BTW — how much did he soak Texas taxpayers for his “book tour”?
