frisco-map2A gay Frisco man claims his neighbor called him a “pervert” before assaulting him early Thursday in a possible anti-gay hate crime.

Jim Hokanson said the neighbor came over a 1 a.m., and began ringing the doorbell and banging on his door.

“He showed me a letter he had gotten in the mail and said I was causing him problems,” Hokanson said.

He said he bought this house in Frisco in September and had never met this neighbor. Hokanson, who is openly gay, lives there with his mother.

The neighbor accused him of telling other people he was a drug dealer. Hokanson excused himself, went back into the house and called police. The neighbor kept banging on the door.

Hokanson opened the door again.

“He started beating me while I was on the phone with 911,” he said. “I was on the ground and bloody when police got there.”

Police called paramedics and went to the neighbor’s door.

“They knocked on the door one time,” he said. “He didn’t answer.”

Police took pictures of the victim.

“Before he hit me, he called me a pervert,” he said.

That epithet could escalate the incident to an anti-gay hate crime. He said that should be on the 911 recording.

Hokanson said he wants to file assault charges but has not heard back from the police.

Frisco police spokesman Greg Barnett said the case has not been assigned yet, but because it is an assault, a detective will be assigned to the case.
