Lupe Valdez

Openly gay Dallas County Sheriff Lupe Valdez is well on her way to re-election after early voting results were posted moments ago.

Valdez, a Democrat who’s seeking a third four-year term, received 251,193 votes in early voting, or 58 percent, to Republican challenger Kirk Launius 181,380 votes, or 41.93 percent, according to the Dallas County elections office.

Valdez was a heavy favorite to win this race in a county that’s been dominated by Democrats for the last three election cycles, and it looks like she’ll cruise to another four years.

In another Dallas County race of note, Democrat Theresa Daniel has a large lead in the race for Dallas County Commissioners Court District 1.

Daniel received 48,106 early votes, or 61 percent, to Republican Larry Miller’s 31,160 votes, or 39 percent.
