SPOTLIGHT: Screening of Brother Outsider: The Life of Bayard Rustin
Bayard Rustin was a civil rights activist and organizer for the majority of his life. But the black gay Quaker is often overlooked amidst the movement’s other leading figures, in part because of his sexual orientation.
Local audiences have a chance to learn about Rustin’s life and struggles when Stonewall Democrats of Denton County screens Brother Outsider: The Life of Bayard Rustin at their monthly meeting, 6:30-8:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 26 at Landmark Grill, 1297 Justin Rd/FM 407 in Lewisville.
The 2003 documentary produced by Nancy Kates, Sam Pollard and Bennett Singer, culls from rare archival footage and interviews to paint a picture of a man committed to social change and nonviolence, who was often found at the margins of his own movement. Rustin died in 1987. He was posthumously awarded the 2013 Presidential Medal of Freedom, which his longtime partner Walter Naegle received on his behalf.
But it took efforts like the 2003 documentary to get him the recognition he deserves.
