U.S. Rep. Barney Frank, an openly gay Democrat from Massachussetts, this week joined the only other openly gay member of Congress in supporting New York Sen. Hillary Clinton for president.

Clinton’s campaign also announced that Frank has been economic advisor to the campaign this week.

“I have from the beginning of this campaign believed that Hillary Clinton was the candidate best qualified to serve a president,” Frank said in a written statement. “I am convinced that once elected, the qualities she will bring to the job commitment, intellect and political skills will make her an extremely effective leader in our efforts to reverse the badly flawed course on which George Bush and past Republican Congresses have set this country.”

Frank also applauded Clinton’s support for LGBT rights.

U.S. Rep Tammy Baldwin, a Democrat from Wisconsin and the only out lesbian in Congress, announced her support for Clinton’s presidential campaign last summer. Baldwin said she is supporting Clinton because of the two women’s longstanding friendship and their shared commitment to health care reform.

Baldwin also said Clinton was “strong and vocal” in her support for ending anti-LGBT discrimination in the workplace.

Clinton leads the crowded field of Democratic candidates, with most polls showing her enjoying a double-digit lead over the next closest contender, Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois.
