West develops postoperative problems from July 11 procedure

SPOKANE, Wash. Former Mayor Jim West was in stable condition Tuesday at a Seattle hospital after developing complications from recent cancer surgery, a spokesman said.
University of Washington Medical Center spokesman Craig Degginger said West was stable, but could give no additional information because of privacy rules.
West, 55, had surgery at the Seattle hospital July 11 and developed postoperative complications involving his kidneys, Bill Etter, an attorney who represented West during last year’s recall, told The (Spokanne) Spokesman-Review.
West has undergone three rounds of chemotherapy since he was diagnosed with colon cancer in early 2003, while he was in the state Senate.
Doctors removed portions of his liver after the cancer spread to that organ.
West was recalled from office last December after he was accused of offering city jobs to men he met while on gay Internet sites. The scandal outed West, a Republican who had remained a staunch opponent of GLBT rights throughout his political career.
