Each year since Exxon and Mobil merged, a proposal has come before the shareholders to add sexual orientation to the company’s nondiscrimination policy. And the percentage of shareholders voting in favor of the proposal has increased each year — until this one.
Only 22 percent of ExxonMobil shareholders voted in favor of adding the protections during today’s annual meeting at the Meyerson Symphony Center in downtown Dallas. Last year 40 percent of shareholders voted in favor of the proposal.
About two dozen LGBT protesters gathered outside the meeting with signs and bullhorns.
Richard Miller of the Dallas Peace Center was inside the meeting voting shares for a friend from Berkeley, Calif. He spoke in favor of the proposal and said a number of other shareholders, including a member of the Rockefeller family, spoke on behalf of environmental justice and sustainability issues. ExxonMobil is a direct descendant of the John D. Rockefeller’s Standard Oil Co.

No self-respecting LGBT person should EVER be caught buying gas from Exxon Mobile.
I used to like their gas, but I won’t buy it now.
Chevron does not discriminate, and their written company policies state so.
@Tom P. Or anyone, really — that oil spill, their dubious spending actions, and obviously, their treatment of LGBT employees should drive people away from their pumps. Unfortunately, they’re highly profitable.
Attack the problem through large shareholders. Put
pressure on them to vote for this change
on their proxy.
Continue to pressure XOM through media,
but add the attack through shareholders.
This is totally disgusting to me and just a huge letdown…I’m sorry—tomorrow is another day and we’ll just have to tackle it again-and keep at it…
when you buy exxon mobil gas your car shits rainbows. I’m LGBT and truth be told if I need gas I’ll buy it regardless. Any self respecting LGBT person would not work for this company. It will stay in business whether you buy from them or not. They’re a multi-million dollar franchise. How bout we stop whining and actually do something. Like start taking our complaints to congress and the white house instead of flaming outside meetings and whining on blogs and forums. Instant action or nothing. Nobody really gives a shit anyway and the people who do care arent enough in numbers. That’s capitalism for you. We’re too far in now to complain. Perhaps you all shld have thought about the fact that voting for either party is still the same end result. Change is only made by the people. Not by the govt who keeps them in check.
