STOMP OUT SYPHILIS CAMPAIGN EXPANDS

Resource Center Dallas’ D/FW Stomp Out Syphilis Campaign has expanded its billboard campaign across Dallas and Tarrant counties to make people more aware of syphilis testing and treatment, program officials have announced.

DFW SOS Campaign coordinator Jai Makokha said there are 20 billboards across Dallas and Tarrant counties, including southern suburbs such as Duncanville and Cedar Hill and northern areas such as Keller and Hurst. He said the expansion is the second wave of the campaign to increase awareness about syphilis in North Texas where infection rates have reached a five-year high.

Makokha said the program is working with Dallas County Health and Human Services and the Texas Department of State Health Services to launch complementary campaigns on STD/HIV prevention. Those efforts include Dallas County’s "9 ½ Minutes" campaign focusing on HIV/AIDS prevention. He said transmission rates for both syphilis and HIV increased by more than 30 percent in Dallas County and by more than 60 percent in Tarrant County from 2008 to 2009.
