Every year, the Dallas Institute presents the Hiett Prize in Humanities, a $50,000 award for someone who show extraordinary promise in the field of the humanities. Needless to say, it’s a big deal — as is the ceremony where the individual is revealed. This past April, the keynote address was delivered by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright David Mamet.
I just learned from a confidential source informed about the decision-making that the keynote speaker in the spring of 2009 will be Stephen Sondheim, the gay composer and lyricist responsible for “Sweeney Todd,” “Company,” “Gypsy” and more great shows. He has an Oscar and more Tonys than you can count.
