Homophobic rapper Trick Trick is in Texas this week, and the folks at Equality Texas aren’t amused. Trick Trick, who’s also performing in Houston and Austin, will open for Ice Cube at the Prophet Bar in Dallas on Saturday night, Dec. 13. Equality Texas says if you want to see Ice Cube, just skip the opening act. After all, Trick Trick “don’t want your faggot money any goddamn way.” Better yet though, go see Trick Trick and “bust him in his forehead.” Read more of TrickTrick’s enlightening lyrics in Equality Texas’ press release after the jump. By the way, Prophet Bar representatives reportedly didn’t return a message from the group.
Homophobic HipHopper Trick Trick Touring Texas
December 11, 2008 – Homophobic HipHop artist Trick Trick is on a multi-city tour of Texas this week, with stops in Houston, Dallas and Austin.
In an interview with AllHipHop.com, Trick Trick stated:
“I’ma go on the record right now with this. Homosexuals are probably not gonna like this album. I don’t want your faggot money any g**d*** way. I don’t like it [homosexuality]. Carry that sh*t somewhere else. It’s just that every time that you turn on the TV, that sissy sh*t is on…and they act like its f**king okay. The world is changing for the worst (sic) when sh*t like that happens. And I address that issue. I address it hard as hell.”
Free speech is free speech. Trick Trick has a right to make his own personal views about gay people heard.
But, where is the line between free speech and inciting acts of violence?
Trick Trick’s lyrics target gay people:
“He goes both ways. Either way he’s gay. Ain’t no other way to say, he’s a f**king faggot so I’m lettin’ off my AK. Bust ’em in his forehead. He ain’t worth lettin’ live. A man and man shouldn’t raise another man’s kids!”
Do these lyrics cross the legal line?
Could these lyrics incite someone to commit a violent act?
Free speech facilitates the exchange of ideas.
The threat of violence halts any free exchange of ideas.
These lyrics seek to justify violence against gay people.
These lyrics are exactly the type of threats and intimidation that incite violence against people based on actual or perceived sexual orientation or gender identity/expression.
These lyrics are beyond reprehensible.
Trick Trick is the opening act for the popular Ice Cube. For its part, the Austin venue, The Mohawk, has issued the following statement on its website:
“Although we are monster fans of Ice Cube and his records over the years, we personally do not support the views of his opening act, Trick Trick, when it comes to gay rights and more simply put, human rights. Openers generally come with the package on big events like this, and to be honest, we didnt even check this guy out until last week. He is clearly an idiot.
“At the Mohawk, as it always has been, and will always be a policy of ALL ARE WELCOME. This includes geeks, politicians, homosexuals, heterosexuals, teachers, students, hipsters, punks, freaks, squares, bankers, lawyers, artists, metal heads, moms, dads, sons and daughters…and yes…sometimes even a**holes like Trick Trick. I don’t think he will feel too welcome at this event though, and I hope he doesn’t. His personal statements are counter to the culture that has developed at the Mohawk, so my guess is he will be there for the electricity on stage, get heckled, and leave.
“With that said, as a live music venue we don’t believe in censorship…but as individuals, we feel like Trick Trick crosses a very important line and it’s not OK with us. As for me, I will be showing up when the headliner begins and not before.”
When contacted via phone, a representative of the Houston concert venue, The Meridian, claimed no knowledge of Trick Trick’s lyrics. A message left at the Dallas concert venue, The Prophet Bar, was not returned.
If you are going to see Ice Cube, skip the opening act. Don’t give Trick Trick the satisfaction of spreading his vile speech. And, if you would like to support our work to educate the public about hate crimes in Texas, and to make the James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Act more effective in prosecuting hate crimes, please consider a tax-deductible gift to Equality Texas Foundation.
Queer Liberaction wanted to protest at this concert Saturday night, but we decided to instead focus our energy and efforts on participation of Israel’s MILK protest at Cinemark, which will last all day.
This concert sure would have been a great opportunity for Collin County Gay and Lesbian Alliance’s “board” to prove that their organization was willing to get out and be visible, and willing to participate in direct actions that let Dallas citizens know “we’re here and we’re queer.” Direct actions, rather than sitting around talking (which is what they said they’re going to do with Cinemark’s management. what a laugh) are the only way to show citizens of Dallas and the local news media that the Dallas gay community does not tolerate homophobic HATRED.
I’m utterly disgusted by the apathy of these established LGBT groups who are basically hiding in the shadows, afraid to come out and be seen or to make the local STRAIGHT news every once in awhile, protesting homophobia. Oh, wait, lemme guess….they plan on having a “meeting” with the owners of the venue? pah-LEASE. That board needs to rent “Iron Jawed Angles” and take notes from the Women’s lib movement. If we want our equality and to stop homophobia in this city, we have to DEMAND it, not ask for it. Asking for it doesn’t work.
I have tried numerous times to reach The Prophet Club here in Dallas to let them know they
have a bigoted idiot performing there, but the answering machine is full.
hmm. it’s funny that they are focusing so much on this cinemark protest and not this concert. maybe because mormons won’t bust a cap in your ass?
Jack E. Jett – you rock. (I mean that in more ways that one….of course)
hahaha. Actually, Queer Liberaction wasn’t made aware of that concert until we had already committed to the Cinemark protest. I’m on just about every LGBT Dallas alert e-mail list I can find, but didn’t find out about it until Thursday. (Got an e-mail from Equality Texas) By then it was too late to plan anything…
So BASICALLY you’re an oversensative dude who has no life but to sit on news letters waiting to pounce on people u couldn’t stand up to one on one. no one has to accept your way of life. get over it. I don’t agree with Trick Trick for saying it’s ok to kill gays but even im tired of seeing it paraded around like everyone should be gay. that’s not what I want my Four year old looking at everytime she looks at tv. I’m glad someone said something about it. I just don’t like the WAY he said it. My religion says no and I stick to that. doesn’t mean im better than u nor does it mean im without flaws. that’s just my decision on the matter and I have a right to that. and I don’t think Trick is Homophobic. that would imply that he was scared of gays. Not sure if u checked his record, but the guy doesn’t seem to be scared of much. lol. I also think the violence lyrics were a lame attempt at shock value. true it didn’t work. but let’s be real, if he really wanted to kill gays, a guy like him would have a body count already. he doesn’t. get over yourselves…
I just said a prayer for your 4-year-old.
Well… I don’t admire Ice Cube, but Trick Trick is amazing, if I was in Texas I would go to the show for Trick Trick’s performance only and would go away when he steps off the stage. He got flow, lyrics and technique most rappers can’t even dream about! And this is a free world, where anyone can hate homosexuals and say about that. And it is not reasonable to make a tragedy out of the fact that Trick Trick disrespects gays. Tricky is not an asshole, unlike those tolerance-guardians who call him this way! In a really free world it is OK not only to be gay, but also to hate them!
