ACTING CHOPS | T.A. Taylor and Cindee Mayfield, left, took top prizes for dramatic acting for their work in Uptown Players’ Trials and Tribulations of a Trailer Trash Housewife; Cedric Neal, above left, and Liz Mikel, above right, were recognized as top actors for musicals in North Texas. Neal and Mikel both appeared in favorite local production of a play, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, at the DTC’s new Wyly Theatre.

There’s more to being a director than yelling "Action!" — and if you’re a theater director, not even that. It’s the ability to tell stories that makes a work memorable.

For Denson, those stories range from comedies to dramas to what has recently become her signature form: the big Broadway musical. Her stagings of Carousel, The King and I and Funny Girl at Lyric, and her anticipated mounting of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels on the stage of the Kalita for Uptown Players, have made her the go-to gal for size with substance.

Camina, on the other hand, has gained some of his  greatest fame going small. His musical comedy short Martini The Movie with drag diva Steven Jay Crabtree has been a festival hit. But now he’s tackling something far more ambitious: a documentary about the raid on the Rainbow Lounge and its aftermath. That’s a story that needs to be told.

BEST LOCAL BAND OR MUSICIAN
Anton Shaw and the Reason

Anton Shaw is all about big: Big voice, big personality, big hair, big boobs. But when it comes to ego, she’s tiny — humbled at being chosen Dallas Voice readers’ favorite singer (and repeating last year’s win for favorite band). She sheds a tear talking about what this means for her coming from the LGBT community: "It’s validating and I wanna be a good representative for the people," she says. Given that she has been singing it up in these parts for seven years without any kind of diva-tude, it’s no wonder she’s kept her following. Her band Shaw and the Reason perform a mix of country, pop, disco and rock with genuine flair. Better so, they are a complete package. The question is — where is that record deal?

DEAL OR STUD | We heart consumer reporter Steve Noviello, who makes finding out you’ve been cheated an unexpectedly pleasurable experience. (Photo by Arnold Wayne Jones)

If that Mr. Steamy or Jupiter Jack you ordered from a late-night infomercial isn’t up to task, try calling Steve Noviello. The consumer reporter on KDFW-Fox 4 News investigates how well products live up to their claims by putting them to the "Deal or Dud" test. But it’s not just the "news-you-can-use" aspect that makes him a readers’ favorite. Noviello also gives his spots a fun edge with clever, frenetic editing while he and normal, everyday people (that would be consumers) determine the quality of those handy new items. And we don’t mind his boyish grin and sense of humor along the way, either. Hunky and helpful is a perfect combo. And we never get enough of his sign off: "That’s my two cents; spend it — wisely." Classic. (And just so you know, both Steamy and Jack were duds. Thanks, Steve.)
