Evangelical-raised popstress was only kidding about abstinance vow. Rebel Christian backs away from ‘Is gay a sin?’ question
On Thursday afternoon, Dallas Voice spoke with Katy Perry. And by that time, Google News had 85 stories reporting that the recently single pop star had taken a vow of celibacy — this coming after her much-publicized breakup with Gym Class Heroes frontman Travis McCoy.
She told TV Guide, "I’ve actually taken a vow of celibacy this year. No kissing anyone. Just my cat, Kitty Purry."
"That was a joke, by the way," Perry told Dallas Voice. "Any fine journalist would’ve got the joke and inserted that in the context. I’m not going to be celibate.
"Pul-eeze. Celibacy for a whole year? I’d rather die," she said.
Perry thinks of herself as a media prankster. However, Perry’s not so nonchalant when it comes to her spirituality.
Last summer, Perry scored a worldwide hit with the ultimate Anne Heche anthem: "I Kissed a Girl. She also had minor success with "Ur So Gay," the first single from her "One of the Boys" album. Some gays have wondered if her tone about same-sex attraction supports the "gay is a choice" argument.
Before "One of the Boys," Perry was tagged as a Christian artist who, in 2001, recorded an album under her birth name, Kate Hudson.
It was also recently announced that Perry will headline The Dinah 2009.
So does Perry believe with the Bible — that same-sex love is immoral?
"My dad is from Memphis, so he’s got a Pentecostal flair, and he’s hilarious. I was raised non-denominational Christian, but it was more evangelical, I guess — like a lot of that stuff you see on television," Perry said.
"I was raised with certain ideas. I can mention what the Bible does say. But as an adult — and in a whole new world, a world that I didn’t even know existed — I definitely have different perspectives. I’m not a poster child for anything perfect or organized or cookie-cutter. I have my own relationship and my own beliefs. And I’m continually on an upward search with all that," she continued. "I really don’t know the answers, nor do I like to impress them on anybody else."

Carrey, McGregor kiss and cuddle with ease
Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor were an item at the Sundance Film Festival, where their gay romance "I Love You Phillip Morris" premiered. Carrey and McGregor steam up the screen with some hot and heavy necking.
What was it like for Carrey to lock lips with McGregor?
"A dream come true. I mean, look at the guy," Carrey said, gesturing at McGregor during a question-and-answer session with the audience after the film’s Sundance premiere Sunday night.
Directed by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, "I Love You Phillip Morris" is based on the true story of a con man (Carrey) who meets the love of his life (McGregor) in prison, then concocts elaborate escapes and masquerades to free himself and his man.
The actors said playing gay was all in a day’s work.
"It’s the same as playing any other kind of man, any other kind of character," said McGregor, saying there was nothing awkward in their kissing and cuddling scenes.
More Rodriguez than ever
Lesbian fave and possible ex-girlfriend of Kristanna Loken, actor Michelle Rodriguez may have gotten voted off "Lost" island. But the "Girlfight"-er maintains a full dance card.
In addition to her work in the upcoming "Fast & Furious" sequel, Rodriguez plays a different kind of warrior in "Tropico de Sangre," where she stars as real-life Dominican heroine Minerva Mirabal. Mirabal and her sisters stood up to dictator Rafael Trujillo and were executed in 1960 for their efforts to take down his corrupt government.
Also look for Rodriguez in "Avatar," director James Cameron’s first feature film since "Titanic." The sci-fi adventure pits a band of humans against an alien race on a distant planet. Both films are slated to hit screens this year.
Cho meets a ‘Drop Dead Diva’
Margaret Cho used to do a stand-up routine based on her experiences of having her own sitcom and being told that she was too fat to be on television. She must be enjoying the irony of being cast on "Drop Dead Diva," a new Lifetime show from gay executive producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron.
The series revolves around a shallow model wannabe who dies in an accident only to find her soul returning in the form of a brilliant, plus-size attorney. Of course, "plus-size" in Hollywood often translates to "Miss Zellweger has taken to eating one donut per day."
